The national highway 291 (abbreviation: B 291 ) is a federal highway in Baden-Wuerttemberg . It begins at the Schwetzingen / Hockenheim motorway junction on the A 6 as a direct extension of the B 39 and initially heads north. At the southwest entrance to Schwetzingen it branches off to the southeast, the road then leads west of the Schwetzingen district of Schälzig as well as Oftersheim and then runs in two lanes in an almost straight line through the Hardtwald until it meets the western bypass of Walldorf leading from Sandhausen . You then follow this to the A 5 at the Walldorf / Wiesloch junction . The section of road through the Hardtwald is very popular with two-wheelers, as it has a wide, separate cycle path.

history

Before the expansion work on the Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed rail line, however, the B 291 had its northern starting point in Schwetzingen on Bismarckplatz. It led to Oftersheim , where it crossed the Rheinbahn at a railroad crossing with gates . As Mannheimer Strasse, the federal road ran to the intersection with Heidelberger Strasse and then turned in the direction of Hardtwaldsiedlung.

Before Walldorf's western bypass was built, the B 291 did not end at the A 5, but led through Walldorf to the intersection with the B 39, which no longer exists in this area .

As part of the gradation of the B 36 in the Schwetzingen area at the end of 2009, the remainder of the B 36 from the Schwetzingen / Hockenheim junction to the southern city entrance with a length of around two kilometers of the B 291 was added.
