The federal road 64 (abbreviation: B 64 ) runs from Telgte in the Münsterland via Warendorf , Herzebrock-Clarholz , Rheda-Wiedenbrück , Rietberg , Delbrück , Paderborn , Höxter , Holzminden , Bad Gandersheim to Seesen on the edge of the Harz Mountains .

history

Bundesstraße 64 follows the old stagecoach connection from Münster via Paderborn to Kassel , which was introduced in 1665 and was one of the most important postal connections in the Westphalian region in the 18th century and connected to the Braunschweig – Holzminden postal route . To facilitate mail traffic, some post embankments were built in the 18th century, the remains of which were later destroyed by land consolidation .

The final expansion of today's road was started in 1834 and completed in 1836 on the section from Münster to Wiedenbrück. Between 1850 and 1856, the route from Wiedenbrück to Paderborn was also expanded into an art route. In 1864 the construction of the road at Brakel began.

Since 1886/87 the Warendorfer Bahn has been running on the Telgte – Rheda-Wiedenbrück section right next to the main road. From Brakel to Höxter , the B 64 often runs right next to the Eggebahn (Altenbeken – Kreiensen) .

The eastern part of this federal road was built between 1821 and 1824 as an east-west connection through the Duchy of Braunschweig and called Holzminder Chaussee .

Originally, the B 64 between the district towns of Holzminden and Höxter did not run together with federal highway 83, but east of Lüchtringen and is now Lower Saxony state road 550.

Originally the B 64 led through Engelade as far as Seesen. It came to its present end with the construction of the West Harz Expressway from the Federal Highway 7 to Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains in the 1970s.

Between 1979 and 1980 the 4.0 kilometer long bypass around Bad Gandersheim was built for around 23.8 million Deutschmarks.

In 2007 the volume of traffic on the B 64 in the village of Negenborn (Holzminden district) was around 7,250 vehicles in 24 hours.

Current state of development

Telgte to Paderborn

The beginning of the B 64 in Telgte at the intersection with the B 51 is part of the bypass road that was extended from there in 1986 . From the beginning of the road to Rheda-Wiedenbrück, the route is partially developed with a wide verge. However, narrower sections have a speed limit over several kilometers, during the day a maximum speed of 80 km / h applies almost continuously. There are no bypass roads in Warendorf, Raestrup, Beelen and Herzebrock-Clarholz. The ring road of Rheda-Wiedenbrück is partially developed highway-like and represents an advance of the planned in the 1970s and have since been rejected A 47 . Here, take the B 64 in the context of a large intersection as a road running to the A2 , the B61 and the B 55 . From Telgte to Rheda, the main road is continuously accompanied by the Münster-Rheda-Wiedenbrück railway line . In all through-passages, the railway line swings away from the road, except in Raestrup and Clarholz , where it also runs directly alongside the road in the village.

After the cross, the route is completely expanded with a wide shoulder. The two places Rietberg and Delbrück crossed earlier have bypass roads. Despite the consistently good state of development, there are always speed limits. The route then leads past Sande, meets the A 33 shortly before Paderborn and divides its course from here with this motorway. After about five kilometers, the B 64 has its own course again and turns into the southern bypass of Paderborn. The route here is similar to a motorway, but without hard shoulder. In this area, the B 64 is marked as a yellow motorway as a motor road. The maximum speed of 120 km / h applies. The earlier route of the B 64 in Paderborn before the construction of the southern bypass led straight through the city center.

Paderborn to Höxter

After Paderborn, there has been a continuous three-lane expansion to Bad Driburg since 2009 . From 2006 to August 2009, the entire route was renovated and the road surface renewed. As part of this, a marking with a wide edge strip was not applied as before the renovation, but instead three lanes were marked. The section of the route over the Stellberg near Bad Driburg, which is designated as a motor road, is completely closed in winter when there is heavy black ice (a corresponding detour is permanently signposted). A green bridge has been located at the Stellberg since 2010. The 3.2 million euro measure was financed from the economic stimulus package II . From the Bad Driburg bypass, there is a generous two-lane expansion with a wide shoulder and numerous bypass roads ( Herste since 1995, Istrup since 1993, Riesel and Brakel since 1985, and Hembsen since 1990). The bypass roads are also all designated as motorways. The former and very narrow B 64 from times before the expansion, which was downgraded to the K 50 district road when the new route was opened, still runs right next to the new line. In the area of the bypass roads from Brakel and Hembsen until the end of the expansion, the entire carriageway was renewed by 2011. Here, too, three lanes were then marked.

After the Hembsen bypass and the large viaduct there is the end of the well-developed new line. In the narrow bend, which is equipped with numerous warning signs, the road changes back to its old course. From here onwards, the further new line should connect without a transition (see also below under the expansion plans). This gap in the new building extends as far as Höxter, and the route is still (as mentioned above) very narrow and sometimes winding. In Godelheim , the B 83 meets the B 64 at an inner-town intersection and runs together with the B 64 on an identical route until Holzminden. In Höxter, the B 64 / B 83 no longer runs on its original and very narrow route right through the city center via Stummrigestrasse and Marktstrasse, but over a relief road that lies further to the west. A first part of this road was expanded in 2011 from a traffic route with a wide shoulder to four lanes. The rest of the relief road in Höxter is to be converted to four strips over the next few years. Despite the generous expansion and turning lanes at the intersections, the flow of traffic is very slow. This new line also runs through the city itself and has several traffic lights at which traffic jams again and again.

One of these crossings is also the beginning of the B 239 , which continues from here to Detmold. Since there is a direct access for the fire brigade to this busy road in Höxter , there are warning signs here that warn the traffic of the emergency vehicles in the event of an emergency.

Höxter to Seesen

After passing through Höxter, there is again an expansion stage with a wide verge. Since 2004, the new bypass has passed the Tonenburg and Albaxen , Stahle , Holzminden , Allersheim , Bevern and Lobach, and from the Tonenburg junction it has been expanded as a three-lane motorized road. In Negenborn , the B 64 leads in a narrow course directly through the village and then climbs past the Amelungsborn monastery . As far as Eschershausen, there are some further sections in three-lane form.

From Eschershausen , the route is partially expanded with shoulder strips. However, narrower sections have a speed limit over several kilometers. There are no bypasses in Vorwohle, Eimen , Wenzen , Brunsen , Greene and Kreiensen . The Bad Gandersheim bypass road is free of crossings, but has no verges. At the end of this, the B 64 is again provided with shoulder strips, leads through Seboldshausen and past Dannhausen , from here it is again expanded to three lanes, still crosses under the A 7 , where the B 64 then a few meters further, about five kilometers before Seesen (approx 1 km before the Seesen district of Engelade ), onto the joint federal road (B 243 / B 248), the B 243 Hildesheim - Nordhausen and the B 248 Northeim - Dannenberg .

Planning for future extensions

Warendorf / Rheda-Wiedenbrück area

In the Warendorf / Rheda-Wiedenbrück area, an expansion of the B 64 is required in order to create an efficient connection between Münster and Bielefeld. To do this, Warendorf, Beelen and Herzebrock-Clarholz are to be bypassed. Proponents of the B64 plus initiative have come together under the umbrella of the IHK North Westphalia and the IHK Ostwestfalen zu Bielefeld . Numerous citizens' initiatives are resisting the expansion plans, u. a. Because of the large amount of land used, the only slight relief effect and thus the continued high traffic loads on the through-town roads and the high level of noise in residential and recreational areas that were previously lightly polluted. Up until the 1970s, a new route in the form of an extension of the A 43 from the Münster-Süd motorway junction was even planned for this area between Münster and Rheda-Wiedenbrück , but this will no longer be realized due to numerous protests. This motorway should go as far as the motorway junction at Rheda-Wiedenbrück, which has now been implemented (see above).

A well-founded criticism of the expansion planning and alternative proposed measures in this section is available from the BUND NRW. A key point in the alternatives is the expansion of the Warendorfer Bahn , which currently runs every hour , although it is considered possible to increase the number to half an hour.

Hembsen to Höxter

As mentioned above, the expansion or new construction of the B 64 has progressed to Hembsen. The so-called gap closure from there to Höxter has been discussed at least since the 1980s. In 2011, the Pro B64 Expansion Association was founded for this purpose. At demonstrations in Ottbergen and Godelheim, representatives of the city and district assured support for the expansion demands. The new section, which is a total of 12.8 kilometers long, is divided into three sections.

The first section comprises the 4.8 kilometer long new B 64 / B 83 building from Höxter to Godelheim. The road to be built here is to have a lane width of 12.5 meters. The plan approval procedure for this section runs until October 28, 2011. The Taubenborn nature reserve is problematic in this section , mainly due to the population of crested newts there . However, residents of Godelheim also criticize the local route.

The second section is 8 kilometers long and covers the route from Godelheim to Ottbergen. The State Office for Roads in North Rhine-Westphalia intends to apply for the planning approval for this second section in 2013. The third and last section runs from Ottbergen to the current expansion at Hembsen and is also 8 kilometers long. The plan is to be applied for in 2014. According to other reports, the state government will only decide after the end of the planning approval procedure for section one whether the project will be pursued as a priority or subordinate.

Negenborn

In the future, the B 64 will be routed around Negenborn (Holzminden district) with a bypass, for which the corresponding funds have already been approved. A plan approval procedure for the 2.79 km long construction line was initiated on April 1, 2009. The planning approval decision was issued on June 25, 2010. After it became legally valid, the first groundbreaking took place on January 7, and thus the start of construction work. The bypass should be completed by 2020.

Eschershausen

On September 24, 2012, the planning approval procedure and the tender for the first construction phase for the north-east bypass Eschershausen were initiated. After that, the B 64 is to bypass the town of Eschershausen northeast near Wickensen and join the previous B 240 through a roundabout between Scharfoldendorf and south of Lüerdissen . The 4.576 km long route will largely be built with two lanes and a width of 11 m. Simultaneously with the construction of the B 64 in this area, a 1.9 km long section of the B 240 is also planned.
