location

The village in the Nethegau is located at the eastern tip of the municipality. Wooded mountain ranges such as the Imberg in the northeast, the Uhlenberg with the Hembser Berg in the north, the southwest Ostheimerfeld with the Ortberg towards Erkeln characterize the landscape. The village is located directly on the Nethe river and is divided into the upper village and the newer settlement "Im Märsch". In 1989 the place got a bypass road of the B 64 , whose traffic previously ran directly through the place.

The eastern border to Ottbergen is also the border between the urban areas of Brakel and Höxter and also between the dioceses of Paderborn and Corvey. The patron saint of the congregation is St. Johannes Baptist , on whose memorial day the annual shooting festival is celebrated. Educational institutions in Hembsen are the kindergarten and the Hembsen-Beller-Erkeln Catholic elementary school, both of which are run by the city. As a result of the recent drop in the number of pupils, the primary school is only part of the Annenschule Brakel.

The history of the estate goes back to the 14th century. In 1750 a new mansion was built in the courtyard, this and the farm buildings were renewed in 1843 and revised in 1910. The castle has existed in its current basic form since 1843. The complex was originally a moated castle owned by the Lords of Asseburg . Later it came into the possession of the Flörken family from Brakel. Through the marriage of Anges Sophie Stricker geb. Flörken with Karl Ferdinand Gunst In 1833 the estate came to the Gunst family from the Fritzlar area (Gut Beller). Franz Gunst was royal Prussia. Economist, seed breeder and chairman of the board of directors of the Brakel sugar factory. After the son Harald Gunst fell in Russia in 1932, the daughter Valerie Antoinette and her husband Jürgen von Kempski Racoszyn took over the property in 1942, followed by their son Harald von Kempski in 1964. Around 1972 the land was sold to the settlement society and in 2016 the castle with courtyard and forest to the Schröder Cultural Foundation (Manfred and Helga Schröder), which operates the United Museums of Wasserschloss Neuenheerse in the Neuenheerse Monastery .
