The Benedictine convent founded by the Church of Heerse in Iburg near Driburg in 1134 was relocated from Oesede to Gehrden by Bishop Bernhard I of Paderborn around 1136 ; According to another document, the relocation did not take place until 1142. From then on, the surrounding villages and farms are relocated under the protection of the mighty monastery walls.

The door with rich iron fittings in the north portal of the church dates from around 1200. The Romanesque monastery church , completed in 1180, is the only remaining building from this time, as the monastery buildings were replaced by more modern buildings in the 17th century. The church is one of the few cruciform churches in Germany and one of the oldest monastery bells in Westphalia rings in its tower .

In 1319 Gehrden received city rights. The urban settlement leaned against the north side of the monastery, the main street ran in a west-east direction. Apart from a few traces of the city fortifications, nothing was left of the city fortifications as early as 1803.

In 1456 Gehrden was the meeting place for the Paderborn estates .

Until the dissolution of the diocese of Paderborn , the city jurisdiction was under the Rent Office Dringenberg in Oberamt Dringenberg .

In 1810, the monastery was dissolved in the course of secularization and partially demolished and converted into a castle by Count Bocholtz-Asseburg zu Niesen , the master of ceremonies of Jérôme Bonaparte . The building then changed hands several times and from 1965 was owned by the family recreation center of the Archdiocese of Paderborn. Today, after remodeling and renovation in 2007/2008, it houses a hotel.

Napoleon formed the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807 and divided it into departments . The capital became Kassel. Gehrden received a Mairie (canton mayor). In addition to the town of Gehrden, the canton included the villages of Auenhausen , Fölsen , Frohnhausen , Hampenhausen , Massenhausen, Natingen , Niesen , Rheder , Schmechten and Siddessen . With the dissolution of the Warburg district and the Dringenberg-Gehrden office by the Sauerland / Paderborn law with effect from January 1, 1975, Gehrden was incorporated into the town of Brakel and retained the status of a titular town .

Gehrden has 939 inhabitants (as of December 2015).

Historical events

Two earthquakes in the middle of the 18th century shook the Paderborn Monastery . We owe the fact that these two earthquakes are remembered, among other things, to the entries in the church book of Gehrden by Vicar (Sacellan) P. Gregorius Waldeyer, OSB. As pastor of Gehrden, he reported about the second great quake on January 18, 1966, saying that the strong shock lasted about an Our Father long.

The earthquake of February 19, 1756, which, like the one that followed, did not cause any major damage or cost human life, was interpreted as a premonition for the Seven Years' War , which brought great misery and suffering throughout the bishopric. The second quake was interpreted as a call to penance, because it also brought the end of a six-month drought after a very good harvest year. Prince-Bishop Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg called nationwide for thanksgiving services for February 8, 1766.

At that time it was not known that the cause of earthquakes is the plate formation in the earth's crust. And that the tectonic structure of the Egge Mountains is actually an earthquake-prone zone, either. Fortunately, Ostwestfalen-Lippe is one of the areas with few earthquakes.

Economy and Infrastructure

Gehrden is an agricultural village. Nevertheless, a few craft businesses have settled in the industrial area east of Gehrden.

tourism

The holiday village and castle in Gehrden account for the majority of overnight stays in the entire Brakel urban area. Since 2006 Gehrden has also been a state-approved resort. The family recreation center in the castle filed for bankruptcy in 2011. After conversion and renovation in 2007/2008 it is now a hotel.
