geography
Geographical location
Borgentreich is located in the Warburger Börde on the border between the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse between the Eggegebirge and the Weser . The closest regional centers are Paderborn, around 35 km north-west, and Kassel, around 35 km south-east.
The core city of Borgentreich is traversed by the Mühlenbach (an Eggel tributary) in an east-west direction, the Vombach (a Diemel tributary) flows through the southern district of Körbecke in a north-south direction and past the southwestern district of Lütgeneder runs in the same way Towards the Eggel.
The urban area has great differences in altitude, the lowest altitude being 169 m above sea level. NN at the outflow of the Eggel from the urban area south of Rösebeck, the highest point, the "Hohe Berg" is 371 m above sea level. NN south of Manrode in close proximity to the state border with Hesse.
geology
The solid rocks were formed between 240 and 220 million years ago mainly from sediments from a sea or from rivers. This does not apply to volcanic breakthroughs on the Tannenkopf, in Weißholz, on the Hohen Berg, Spiegelsberg and west of Elendburg, which are only around 19 million years old. In the ravines and in wide areas of Warburg Borde cover loose rock of the Ice Age , especially deposited by the wind loess , sand and gravel , the surface of solid rock, which primarily from clay - and marl stones , some of them from sand and dolomite rocks of the Keuper is . In the solid rock base underneath there are also rocks from the red sandstone and from ancient times .
Drinking water is taken from the groundwater from various rocks in the underground. The karstified limestones of the Upper Muschelkalkzeit are the most important aquifers. Due to the gypsum in clay stones , however, the groundwater is often rich in calcium sulfate, so that it cannot be used as drinking water. For this reason, there is a long-distance water pipeline to the neighboring town of Trendelburg to secure the drinking water supply .
Borgentreich is well suited, very well in ridges, for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of a geothermal probe and heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the adjacent map).
Expansion and use of the urban area
The area of the city, classified as a "large rural community", of 138.76 km² has a north-south extension of around 17.3 km and a west-east extension of around 16.6 km.

history
During excavations in 2011, a burial field from around 4,900 BC was discovered in the vicinity of the Großeeder district within a 14-football-field settlement.
Borgentreich was first mentioned as Borguntriche in 1280 , when the Paderborn Bishop Otto von Rietberg received permission to fortify the city from Archbishop Siegfried von Westerburg of Cologne . The exact location of the episcopal castle has not been handed down, the beam tower of the city wall, which was largely demolished in 1833, is still preserved.
Borgentreich has belonged to the secular rule of the German diocese Paderborn , originally in the duchy of Saxony , since it was founded . From the 14th century, the territory of the prince-bishopric of Paderborn ( Hochstift ) was formed in the Holy Roman Empire , and from the 16th century it became part of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire . In addition to Paderborn , Warburg and Brakel , Borgentreich was one of the four so-called capitals of the principality. In 1802/03 the bishopric was occupied by the Kingdom of Prussia . In Napoleonic times the place was part of the Kingdom of Westphalia . From 1815 Borgentreich finally belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia, from 1871 it was part of the German Empire . 1945–1949 Borgentreich was part of the British occupation zone , from 1946 it belonged to North Rhine-Westphalia and from 1949 to the Federal Republic of Germany .
Religions
Due to its affiliation to the former bishopric of Paderborn, the majority of the population of Borgentreich is traditionally Catholic . The ten Catholic parishes in the districts belong to the parish association Borgentreich in the deanery Höxter of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
The Evangelical Lutheran believers in the community area belong to the Evangelical Church in Borgentreich. This belongs to the Paderborn parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia .
In Borgentreich, the Jewish cemeteries in the districts of Borgentreich , Borgholz , Bühne and Großeneder and the old synagogue in the district of Borgholz remind of the Jewish past of the place.

Buildings
Parish Church of St. John Baptist
The historic baroque organ from Borgentreich is located in the St. Johannes Baptist Church . The instrument was built in the 17th century for the monastery church of Dalheim monastery . In the course of the secularization , the Dalheim monastery was dissolved and the inventory was "silvered", whereby the organ - with the permission of the Prussian king - was sold to Borgentreich and installed by the organ builder Isfording .
Other buildings
The oldest building in Borgentreich is the Stone House . Its history is closely linked to Hardehausen Monastery . Cistercian monks used the old tithe barn from 1405/1406 to 1803 as a monastery settlement. The exact date of construction of the house is not known, it is given as "around 1300". A fire has been handed down from the year 1313, so it must have already existed at this point in time. As one of only a few monastery courtyards preserved in Westphalia, the building is of regional cultural and historical importance. The vaulted cellar of the stone house is dated to the end of the 12th century; it is the oldest secular vaulted cellar in the wide area. After the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803, the Hardehausen monastery became the property of the Prussian state, which sold the stone house in 1848 to the city of Borgentreich, whose property it is to this day. From 1920 to 1952 the house was used as a school, after which it was partly rented for residential purposes until 1977. The historic building then stood empty and gradually fell into disrepair. In 1985 it was registered as an architectural monument. After renovation and internal renovation in 1999, the house became the seat of the landscape station in the Höxter district as well as the citizens' initiative “Livable Bördeland and Diemeltal”, the natural history association Egge-Weser and the “Day of Regions” alliance. The small Kurt Preywisch library with the estate of what is probably the most important natural scientist of the second half of the 20th century in the Höxter district is located on the 2nd floor . In addition, nature lovers can view the small permanent exhibition of specimens and skulls of native animals as well as pictures and panels on nature and nature conservation in the Höxter district, which is located in the Steinerne Haus, during business hours.

Six nature reserves with a total size of around 287 hectares are designated in the urban area. These are the “Rösebecker Bruch”, the “Körbecker Bruch”, the “Untere Eggeltal”, the “Samensberg”, the “Schwiemelkopf” and the “Lebersiek” (see also the list of nature reserves in the Höxter district ). All Borgentreich natural monuments are solitary trees or groups of trees.
