Freakstock
The Freakstock is a Christian music festival . It is "Europe's largest alternative Jesus festival". The annual festival is organized by the Jesus Freaks , a Christian free church community. First held in Wiesbaden in 1995 , it took place between 1997 and 2008 in Gotha ( Thuringia ) on the Boxberg racecourse . For 2015 and 2016 the Freakstock moved to the Allstedt airfield , a former military airfield of the aviation forces of the western group of the Soviet armed forces near Allstedt in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in the southwest of Saxony-Anhalt . In August 2018, the festival took place for the first time in Kierspe Rönsahl at Gut Haarbecke and opened its doors there again in August 2019.
history
The first idea of the Freakstock is said to have come up on March 24, 1992. The first implementation of the Freakstock took place in November 1995 in Wiesbaden with around 400 participants. At that time it still had the subtitle "The Jesus Freaks Festival". The meeting room of a church in Wiesbaden, where the Jesus Freaks Mainz met at the time, served as the venue. At this Freakstock, the idea came up to hold the festival every six months, but this was never implemented.
A year later, the festival concept switched to an open air . The venue was a soccer field in Neudrossenfeld , near Bayreuth . Around 800 visitors came.
In 1997 it moved to the Boxberg in Gotha . In 1998 the subtitle was renamed from "Jesus Freaks Festival" to "Jesus Festival".
In 2004 there was an increase to over 7,000 participants who came to the Freakstock on Boxberg. In the following year, the festival achieved a record attendance of almost 8,000 visitors, which was never reached again. Since then, the number of visitors has declined sharply in some cases and has now leveled off at around 3000 (information provided by the organizers). With 60 bands on a total of 5 stages, Freakstock was one of the largest Christian festivals in Europe.
From 2009 to 2014 the Freakstock took place on a former barracks site in Borgentreich , which belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church .
In 2015 and 2016 the Freakstock took place for the first time on the airfield in Allstedt .
In January 2017 it was announced that the festival would not take place in 2017.
In 2018, the Freakstock was held for the first time at Gut Haarbecke in Kierspe- Rönsahl, where it also took place the following year.
In 2020, due to the corona pandemic in Germany , the event will not take place as a festival on site, but there will be a live stream with music on two days under the title Freakstock Home Edition .
