Under Christian music especially music is understood by Christian underlaid texts, such as spiritual music that springs from the Christian tradition, so for example, the Gregorian chant , the a cappella chants of Orthodox liturgies , the oratory , the chorales , concert fairs and Passions and the music in passion plays .

Furthermore, there are different and sometimes extensive traditions of hymn in the Christian churches - for example in continental Europe or in the English cultural area - and of Christian choral singing . For this originally European genre has primarily in the southern United States under the influence of the early jazz of gospel singing developed which establishes a whole tradition of Christian-oriented jazz.

The sound archive maintained by the Bundesverband Kulturarbeit in der Evangelischen Jugend eV (bka) represents the most extensive collection of sound carriers with Christian music, especially popular music.
