Thomas Wolfgang Feist (born April 8, 1965 in Leipzig ) is a German CDU politician , entrepreneur and representative for Jewish life in Saxony. The music and cultural scientist was a consultant for cultural work, intercultural work and music at the Evangelical Church of Saxony and also chairman of the Federal Association for Cultural Work in Protestant Youth . From 2009 to 2017 he was a member of the German Bundestag .

Life

As a non- FDJ member in the GDR , Feist did not have access to the Abitur, so that after completing the ten-class polytechnic high school he began training as a craftsman and successfully completed it. He then worked as a tradesman at the University of Leipzig until 1993 , later as a trainer for learning disabled and socially disadvantaged young people.

Over the years there has been an increasing commitment in political circles and the environmental movement of the Evangelical Church . He is the founder of the music theater "Kaktus".

From 1995 he was a consultant for musical, cultural and intercultural education at the State Youth Parish Office of Saxony. This was followed by a degree in musicology, sociology and theology with a “Magister Artium” (MA) degree. In 2005 he was awarded a PhD with a thesis on "Music as a cultural factor". phil. PhD .

From 1999 to 2008 Feist was chairman of the Music Working Group, until 2012 he worked in the Federal Association for Cultural Work in Protestant Youth , was a member of the German Music Council and the Society for Music Research . In 1997 he founded the youth culture network CrossOver. From 2003 to 2012 he headed the sound archive in Leipzig, which is part of the Federal Association for Cultural Work in Protestant Youth and has been located at the Liturgy Institute of the VELKD at the Theological Faculty of the University of Leipzig since October 2012.

From 2010 to 2015 Feist was chairman of the German-Israeli Society in Leipzig. Since 2010 he has been chairman of the Leipzig regional committee of Jugend musiziert . He is a member of the board of trustees of the Ephraim Carlebach Foundation Leipzig and patron of the Leipzig International Football Festival (awarded the Julius Hirsch Prize of the DFB).

Feist is married and has three children.

In 2018 he founded the consulting agency LeipzigConsult and has been self-employed ever since.

For the 2009 Bundestag elections , he ran as a CDU candidate for the directorship of the Bundestag in the Leipzig II constituency and won the mandate that had been won in 2005 by SPD applicant Gunter Weißgerber . He prevailed against the former Mayor of Leipzig and Federal Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee ( SPD ) , among others . In the general election in 2013 he was again elected directly.

In the 17th legislative period of the German Bundestag, Feist was on the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment , the Subcommittee on Foreign Cultural and Educational Policy and on behalf of the following committees: Petition , Foreign Policy , Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and European Assembly for Security and Defense / Assembly of the Western European Union.

In the 18th legislative term of the German Bundestag Feist was rapporteur for Professional Education and Internationalization in the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment , as Coordinator on the Subcommittee on cultural relations and education policy as well as representative of the Foreign Committee on Foreign Relations and was involved in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . Here he was a member of the committee for culture, education, science and sport. Furthermore, he was a member of the Parliamentary Society , the German-Israeli Parliamentary Group, the German-Indian Parliamentary Group and the German-Iranian Parliamentary Group as well as in the Eastern Europe Parliamentary Forum.

Feist was the initiator of the federal program “Culture makes you strong”, which is endowed with 230 million euros, and the federal program “Reading start for refugees”. He initiated this as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Reading Foundation .

In June 2012, the Leipzig city magazine kreuzer awarded him the negative “Snail of the Month” prize because of his critical comments on the use of the area around the Leipzig Völkerschlachtdenkmal for fun events . On the other hand, he received support for his advance from Leipzig's honorary citizen Erich Loest (“A Totenmal can't take jokes”) and a survey by the Leipziger Volkszeitung . In a survey, more than 3/4 of the callers spoke out against the so-called "bathtub race" in front of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations. This event has now been discontinued.

In the 2017 federal election , Thomas Feist ran again as a direct candidate in the Leipzig II constituency, but lost to Sören Pellmann with 24.6% ( Die Linke , 25.3%). Even his 5th place on the state list of the CDU Saxony was not enough for entry into the Bundestag. However, he is the first to succeed in the event that a Saxon CDU mandate holder leaves the Bundestag.

In March 2019, Thomas Feist was appointed Commissioner for Jewish Life by the government of the Free State of Saxony. With his appointment, Feist is the contact person for Jewish citizens and the Jewish communities in Saxony. On the other hand, its tasks are to advise and support the state government in questions of promoting Jewish life, the culture of remembrance and the care of the historical heritage. In addition, the commissioner should act as a mediator for the fight against anti-Semitism by the Free State and civil society organizations. The commissioner's work is carried out on a voluntary basis and is supported by an expert council appointed by the Minister of Culture of the Free State of Saxony and by an office.

In November 2019 he was elected district chairman of the CDU Leipzig. In the vote, he prevailed against the incumbent member of the Bundestag Jens Lehmann with 101 to 98 votes.

On March 1, 2020, Thomas Feist used the slogan “If a cat in the fish shop gets young, are they fish?” And quoted the comedian Eberhard Cohrs during the election evening of the mayoral election, broadcast live on Leipzig television . This was sharply criticized by various media and parties in terms of content and because of Cohrs' SS membership. Feist told the Leipzig Volkszeitung that he actually knew the saying from Cohrs, but did not know about his SS past.
