Society for Music Research

The Society for Music Research ( GfM ) is a professional association of musicologists and institutes active in study, research and teaching in Germany . It has over 1,600 members. The association is based in Kassel (Hesse).

The company was founded in 1946 after there had already been a previous institution. She deals with questions of music history , music ethnology and systematic musicology . The society also promotes musicological research in dialogue with other disciplines. In addition, it sees itself as an organ of communication of knowledge from the field of music to the public.

The society publishes the scientific journal Die Musikforschung through Bärenreiter-Verlag and also works with the publishers Breitkopf & Härtel , Henle , Laaber , Georg Olms and Schott .

A scientific conference with symposia, lectures and events by the specialist groups is organized annually; every four years as the "International Congress of the Society for Music Research".
