Martin Ruhnke

Martin Ruhnke (born June 14, 1921 in Köslin ; † September 25, 2004 ) was a German musicologist . His main research interests were early baroque music theory , Italian baroque opera, and the life and work of Georg Philipp Telemann .

Life

Martin Ruhnke was in Kiel with a thesis on the theory of music in 1954 Joachim Burmeister's doctorate . He then worked as a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin and completed his habilitation in 1961. In 1964 he was given the chair for musicology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , which he held until his retirement in 1986.

Ruhnke was President of the Society for Music Research from 1968 to 1974 and President of the International Telemann Society from 1991 to 1997 . From 1960 to 2003 he was responsible for the Telemann edition of the Center for Telemann Care and Research Magdeburg . 1984, 1992 and 1999 was published his three-volume Telemann works directory in which he the Telemann vocal works directory of Werner Menke (1982/1983) completed the instrumental works. Ruhnke "shaped [...] Telemann research as a whole, which he introduced into the academic discourse and for which he set essential standards" (Ute Poetzsch). In 1995 he received the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize of the state capital Magdeburg . He also dealt with the music history of his native Pomerania and in 1990 became a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania .
