Karol Stryja (born February 2, 1915 in Cieszyn , † January 31, 1998 in Katowice ) was a Polish conductor and music teacher.

Stryja, the son of a tailor in Cieszyn, studied to become a teacher after high school . After completing his studies in 1934, he worked as a teacher and at the same time took a course at the Katowice Music Academy , which he graduated in 1939. Interrupted by the turmoil of World War II, he was only able to successfully complete his training as a conductor in 1951.

As early as 1937, he took over responsibility for the regional echo choir in Łaziska Górne as conductor . Stryja's first position as artistic director and conductor was the Silesian Philharmonic (Filharmonia Śląska) in Katowice in 1953. He held the same position from 1968 to 1983 with the symphony orchestra in Odense , Denmark .

With the Silesian Philharmonic, the Odense Symfoniorkester and other well-known orchestras, Stryja toured many European countries as well as the United States, Argentina, Israel, Japan and Cuba. He has also conducted at various international music festivals. At the same time he held the chair for conductors in Katowice.

In 1979 he founded the international Grzegorz-Fitelberg competition for conductors in Katowice and in 1980 the international Carl Nielsen violin competition in Odense.

In 1984 he was awarded the academic title of professor. In March 1995, President Lech Wałęsa honored him with the Order of Polonia Restituta . He was also the holder of the Order of Saints Cyril and Methodius, first class, which was awarded to him by the People's Republic of Bulgaria , which was ruled communist until 1991 .

Karol Stryja died on January 31, 1998 in Katowice and is buried in the evangelical cemetery in Cieszyn.
