Christoph-Hellmut Mahling
Christoph-Hellmut Mahling (born May 25, 1932 in Berlin ; † February 13, 2012 in Mainz ) was a musicologist and professor at various universities.
Live and act
Mahling studied musicology from 1957 to 1962 at the Universities of Tübingen and Saarbrücken with Walter Gerstenberg , Georg Reichert, Joseph Müller-Blattau and Walter Salmen .
In 1962 he was promoted to Dr. phil. (Dissertation: Studies on the History of the Opera Choir ) and became an assistant at the Musicological Institute of the Saarland University in Saarbrücken in 1963. In 1972 he completed his habilitation there under Walter Wiora for the subject of musicology (Habil. Writing: orchestra and orchestra musicians in Germany from 1700 to 1850 ). In the same year he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor. Since 1981 he had a professorship at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz ; until March 2000 he was head of the musicological institute there. From 1987 to 1992 Mahling was President of the International Musicological Society . Mahling also worked as one of the leading pioneers of a complete edition of Gaspare Spontini's letters , which has been published by Hainholz Verlag ( Göttingen ) since 2013 .
