The purpose of the foundation is to promote young musicians and organize concerts. Its headquarters are in the Villa Musica on the Alexander Bastion in Mainz . Villa Musica has its own academy for chamber music in the electoral castle of Engers in Neuwied .

history

The founders were the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate and the then Südwestfunk. In 1992 the foundation received a new structure with an administrative board of directors, a board of trustees as a supervisory body, full-time management and an artistic director. In 2019 these structures were modified again. Since then, a board of directors has jointly assumed the tasks of management and some of the board functions. The board of trustees is only an advisory body. The respective State Secretary for Culture has been elected chairman of the board since 1992. So far, these have been Joachim Hofmann-Göttig (1992–2001 and 2006–2010), Roland Härtel (2001–2006), Walter Schumacher (2010–2016) and Salvatore Barbaro (2016–2019). State Secretary Denis Alt has been CEO since 2019 . Members of the board of directors are the artistic director Alexander Hülshoff, who as chairman of the board of directors represents the foundation externally; the finance director Heidrun Miller; and the scientific director Karl Böhmer.

In the almost 34 years of its existence, the Villa Musica has supported more than 2,000 young musicians through additional training in chamber music , but also through projects with singing, in the chamber orchestra (Camerata Villa Musica), in new music and baroque music . In 35 concert seasons, it has given more than 5,000 concerts.

Working method of the foundation

Talented young musicians in the last third of their studies are selected through an audition. For three years they have the opportunity to rehearse and give concerts with the teachers at Villa Musica. Villa Musica is one of the world's most renowned addresses for chamber music.

The foundation organizes around 120 concerts a year, at least 70% of which come from projects aimed at promoting young talent. In addition to these “academy concerts”, the foundation also organizes concerts made in Rhineland-Palatinate, for example through the series “Music in Castles and Palaces” as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate cultural summer . In addition to the regular concerts in the Villa Musica (Mainz), Engers Castle (Neuwied), Villa Ludwigshöhe ( Edenkoben ) and in Trier, there are also concerts throughout Rhineland-Palatinate, especially in rural areas. The foundation works with more than 40 co-organizers across the country. The Academy for Chamber Music in Engers Castle is the training center where the RheinVokal Festival and the Friends of Villa Musica eV association are also located. In the state capital, the Villa Musica, the state museum and other venues serve as stages. Here the foundation is also involved in the Mainz Music Summer, in the Palatinate in the Trifelsserenaden. In addition, she cooperates with many partners, especially with SWR2 and the GDKE - castles, palaces, antiquities of Rhineland-Palatinate.

In 2014 Villa Musica received the art prize of the Ike and Berthold Roland Foundation.
