Salvatore Barbaro (born July 22, 1974 in Fulda ) is a financial scientist and former German politician ( SPD ). He was State Secretary for Finance of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate since 2010 and State Secretary in the Ministry for Science, Further Education and Culture of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate from 2016 to the end of February 2019 .

Life

After attending primary and secondary school Barbaro earned at the vocational school , the average maturity . From 1992 to 1995 he attended the upper level of the Richard Müller School in Fulda. In 1995 he began studying economics , business education and German at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . There he received his doctorate in 2004 on the subject of "Equity and Efficiency Considerations of Public Higher Education" . Before graduating, Barbaro was an Honorary Associate at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . In 2012 he was appointed honorary professor by the President of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.

From 2004 to 2006, Barbaro worked at the Institute for Economics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . He then went to the office of the Minister for Economics, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate , Hendrik Hering , as a policy adviser . From 2007 to 2008, Barbaro represented the Chair of Public Finance at the University of Mainz before he went to the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Culture as deputy head of the central department and budget representative . On July 20, 2010, the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate and the State's Minister of Finance, Kurt Beck and Carsten Kühl , introduced Barbaro as the new State Secretary for Finance. He has been in office since August 17, 2010. Salvatore Barbaro was chairman of the supervisory board of Lotto Rheinland-Pfalz GmbH from 2010, and chairman of the board of directors of the merged investment and structural bank Rheinland-Pfalz AöR from 2012 to 2016 . From 2013 to 2017 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH, from 2016 to 2019 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the University Medical Center Mainz AöR and also from 2016 to 2019 Chairman of the Landesstiftung Arp-Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck .

At the end of February 2019, Barbaro ended his political career to take on a substitute professorship in economics at the University of Mainz.
