The Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer is an initiative of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate that bundles and promotes cultural projects throughout the state under one roof. The cultural summer takes place every year from May 1st to October 31st (until 2017: October 3rd) and has meanwhile gained national coverage.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Summer was launched in 1992 by the State Ministry of Culture in order to make the diverse cultural offerings better known in all regions of the state. At the same time, it was hoped that cultural workers in the country would network more closely.

The expectations were more than fulfilled, the initiative quickly developed into a nationally recognized model project that made a significant contribution to the further development and strengthening of cultural life in Rhineland-Palatinate. The program now includes around 250 cultural projects of all kinds, from annual major events such as the Nibelungen Festival in Worms to the in-house projects and series with which the project managers of the cultural summer supplement the offer, to unique themed projects.

organization

The cultural summer is a cooperation model. The municipalities and the independent cultural institutions have the personnel and spatial infrastructure for the events. The cultural summer is carried out by and with them - coordinated by the Kultursommer office in Mainz.

In 1992 the cultural summer started as an initiative of the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate, located in the responsible Ministry of Culture. In July 1994, the cultural summer becomes a registered association, its members are officers of the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Culture; the minister is on the board. Its financial basis is secured by interest income from the capital of the Rhineland-Palatinate Foundation for Culture; since 2008 this has been done in the form of institutional funding.
