Open ear festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Open Ohr Festival (OOF) at the Mainz Citadel has been a thematically oriented youth culture festival that has been taking place annually over Whitsun since 1975 with discussion forums , workshops , cabaret and live concerts as well as tent camps .

Structures

The legal sponsor is the youth welfare office of the city of Mainz , financially supported by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture and the Friends' Association Open Ohr. The actual organizer is the free project group, which is given a great deal of freedom in terms of content, since it has been carrying the main burden of non-administrative organizational work for many years on an ultimately voluntary basis with changing people. One of the early employees and companions here was Reinhard Hippen . The resulting conflicts about special program items have repeatedly challenged, mobilized and kept the culture of conversation over the years.

Open ear support association

Friends of the festival formed the non-profit Open-Ohr Association in September 1995 after the festival was questioned by the conservative parties in the Mainz city council. The aim of the association is to preserve the Open Ohr as a political culture festival, to defend the autonomy of the project group creating the program and to secure the citadel as a festival location in the long term. The association advocates better funding for the festival and supports it with donations. In addition, the association wants to speak out in the cultural and political discussion in Mainz.

content

Set up as a non-commercial , thematic youth culture festival , the Open Ohr offers 5,000 - 9,000 mostly young visitors the opportunity to deal intensively with current social issues over four days. Over the decades, the Open Ohr Festival has acquired the reputation of a nationwide unique example of successful youth cultural work . The current Mayor of Mainz and former youth and social affairs director Michael Ebling called it "the only still existing youth policy festival in the Federal Republic".

In addition to the forums, theater and cabaret productions and live concerts, there has also been a children's program for many years. Over four days, up to 300 artists from music, theater , cabaret, cabaret and action art can be experienced, with many taking place in parallel.

subjects

The themes of the festivals are worked out every year by the independent project group. Panel discussions, readings, roundtables, workshops and art projects will take place at the festival alongside music, theater, cabaret and film. The organizers are talking about providing around 100 speakers from politics, culture, science and business every year.
