A tent camp is a camp whose accommodation , medical and physical supplies and storage facilities consist of tents .

Any type of camp can be set up as a tent camp, but mostly it means a holiday camp in which young people participate voluntarily in their free time. Other camps that are often designed as tent camps are:

In the case of large and long-term tent camps in particular, one speaks of tent cities .

The advantage of a tent camp is, on the one hand, the quick set-up time. Shortly after a disaster, tent camps with supply and sleeping tents can be set up. On the other hand, the flexibility of the change of location speaks in favor of such a warehouse. Short-term changes in capacities can be carried out just as quickly as the subsequent relocation to better terrain.

Tent camps usually have sanitary facilities on the edge of the site and in a position facing away from the main wind direction. Chemical toilets are not always available, which is why simple pits with several seats or individual cabins are also built. Depending on the type of tent camp, there are also hospital and medical tents as well as cooking and dining tents. There are also meeting places at a suitable, often in the middle of the camp.

Tent camp as a holiday camp

Many tent camps are run as holiday camps and usually last between one and three weeks. They are often organized by a youth work agency , such as a youth association. The origin of these tent camps goes back to the youth movement of the early 20th century. Often, numerous youth groups meet at previously agreed places and form a large common camp. For large events such as the World Youth Day 2005 in Germany or international peace congresses, special tent camps are designed by the organizers or the municipalities in order to meet the large number of young participants.

The center of a tent camp of scout groups or other adventure- oriented leisure groups is usually the campfire . The symbol of the camp group is often a flag or pennant attached to a pole . The loss of this symbol means a loss of honor for the group, which is why both the fire and the flag are monitored by night vigils. Typical tents of the German scout groups are the Kohten and yurts .

The falcon camps are based on the tradition of the children's republics and try to form a self-governing and self-determined community. The communal life of girls and boys, democratic and solidary learning processes and international encounters within the framework of the international groupings International Falcon Movement and International Union of Socialist Youth characterize many of the three-week tent camps, which often accommodate several thousand people. But smaller regional tent camps are also held.

The Schoenstatt Youth also offers tent camps for girls and boys. The meeting, which usually lasts seven to ten days, is prepared and carried out with topics that change every year. Camp themes such as Indians , Asterix , Knights , Egypt should make the tent camp varied. There is also always a connection to general religious and Schoenstatt themes and the Kentenich pedagogy . Church tent camps

Numerous other church organizations such as community youth groups, local groups of the Evangelical Youth Work in Württemberg (ejw) , the EC , the BDKJ , the KLJB , the YMCA or the BESJ also run tent camps that differ in terms of equipment and concept. What they have in common is the goal of conveying Christian beliefs, for example through daily devotions , Bible studies and common grace . Another goal is to convey Christian values such as tolerance, equality, solidarity and self-determination.

The overwhelming number of camps run by ecclesiastical sponsors are multiconfessional and largely open to the world. The concept of the tent camp mainly serves to support and promote adventure-oriented youth work and thus - especially during the holiday periods - also helps to relieve working parents. The spread of Bible-oriented beliefs is not in the foreground here, also due to the multi-confessionalism.

Integrative tent camps

In the case of integrative camp camps, in addition to the actual leisure activities, the additional goal is to create a program that is both challenging and solvable for disabled and non-disabled children. In contrast to other forms of tent camp, this type of leisure time requires a particularly high level of care from educational staff, on the one hand to meet the nursing needs of the children, on the other hand to coordinate, balance and embellish the program for both target groups. Especially the non-disabled children should learn to be able to approach disabled children more easily, to reduce possible fear of contact and to recognize the existing strengths.
