The game begins when a dragon talks about the archenemy Gnasty Gnorc , who downright frowns on him . When he overhears the conversation and feels insulted to a high degree, he turns all dragons into crystal statues from which they can no longer escape themselves. Only Spyro is the only dragon that is not turned into a statue and therefore has to free all other dragons that are scattered throughout the dragon kingdom .

The primary objective of the game is to defeat Gnasty Gnorc and his Gnorc army and to rescue all 80 dragons and the twelve stolen dragon eggs. If all 12,000 gems are also collected (100%), you get access to Gnasty's loot , a bonus level where there are still 2,000 (bonus) gems (120%).

In most cases, Spyro face the so-called Gnorcs , over which Gnasty rules, as opponents who adapt to the conditions of a respective world. As the game progresses, these become stronger and stronger and occasionally have protection against Spyro's fire breath or his ramming attack. In addition, the opponents of the respective worlds are always adapted to the theme of this. For example, the Magic Crafters are based on magicians. There are a total of 6 different home worlds:

  • Artisans
  • Peace Keepers
  • Magic Crafters
  • Beast Makers
  • Dream weavers
  • Gnasty's World (+ bonus level Gnasty's loot )

The plot begins when Spyro walks around the rainy dragon world and longs for the sun. When he happened to see the gate to the Drachenufer, he decided to take a few days vacation there.

Meanwhile, in Glimmer, a small world of the Avalar empire, the three beings "Professor", "Elora" and "Hunter" plan to bring a dragon into their world to stop "Ripto" who is terrorizing the country. A short time later the professor sounds the alarm that he has finally found a dragon, which immediately afterwards Spyro emerges from this gate. A little disappointed with their catch, everyone is surprised by Ripto, who destroys the gateway to the dragon world. After a short prologue, Spyro does not receive much information for his journey apart from a diary until all other beings disappear and Spyro is left alone in Glimmer.

Over the course of the game, additional information is revealed to Spyro, whereby the player u. a. learns of the circumstances for Ripto's appearance. It is also explained that the power of talismans and balls from the different worlds are necessary to beat Ripto. Thus, the primary task of the game is to collect the talismans of the individual worlds and to earn as many balls as possible from the individual tasks. During his journey, Spyro help the female faun Elora, who is always a good source of information for Spyro, the professor who wants to bring Spyro back into the dragon world, a hunter, a fearful and forgetful cheetah who likes to challenge Spyro, as well as a bag of money that Spyro in removes the gemstones at any suitable moment in order to give him new skills or access to other worlds. After Spyro has defeated Ripto's partner Schluck and Crush, he then wins against Ripto and can finally step onto the long-awaited Drachenufer.

In contrast to the first part, some changes have been made. In the second part, Spyro is not alone in facing his enemy, but receives extensive support from his new friends. Furthermore, the new skills swimming, diving, climbing and headbutt have now been introduced, which the player can acquire from Geldsack. In addition, by defeating opponents, the player no longer receives gems, but ghost particles, which in most cases charge certain columns of energy and Spyro receives an extra ability for a short time when these columns are passed. These skills are: Super flight , can fly with the Spyro outside the flight level; Superfire , a shot of fire that can melt metal; Protective shield with which Spyro is invincible for a short time and z. B. can walk on lava and acid; Supersprint , with which Spyro can, for example, drive into metal gates; Eisatem , can be frozen for a short time with the opponent and used as a "platform" as well as a super jump , the Spyro catapulted into the air.

Some key assignments have also been changed. Spyro now makes a flutter flight when the triangle button is pressed after a gliding flight, while in the first part the flight was simply canceled. By pressing all the R and L buttons, the Libelle Sparx also shows where the missing gems are in a world.

While all dragons are sleeping peacefully in the dragon realm, a hooded girl appears there who wants to steal dragon eggs. Carelessly, however, she wakes up some dragons, but is able to flee at the last moment. Immediately afterwards it turns out that she is only an accomplice of a sorceress who gave her the order to steal the dragon's eggs. Since only Spyro fits through the holes in the floor that lead to the other side of the world, a new adventure for the little purple dragon starts at this point.

During the game you find out that the sorceress wants the eggs to strengthen her own power. Her assistant Bianca, who had stolen the dragon eggs, is clearly on the side of the sorceress at the beginning and warns Spyro and Jäger several times to disappear from this world again. During the course of the game she gets nicer and nicer, which is mainly due to the fact that Hunter saved her from a monster. Jäger apparently fell in love with Bianca right from the start, which he also suggests in some scenes. Bianca herself is actually a nice person who was tricked by the sorceress herself because she told her that she only needed the eggs to let the magic into the world. After a while, Bianca realizes that the sorceress is planning something different with the dragon eggs than she actually stated. When she speaks to the sorceress directly and admits that she only needs the dragon eggs to strengthen her own power, Bianca decides to end the cooperation with the sorceress and to join Spyro and Jäger in the future. After she freed Jäger from his cell, she tries to make friends with Spyro, who is initially skeptical, but later accepts her help. After Spyro has defeated the sorceress, Bianca and Jäger find each other and kiss in front of a fireworks display in the final scene. At the same time, Spyro receives company from Elora, who is still known from Part 2 and who is apparently also in love with Spyro.

New in the third part is that the player can play with other characters, who usually also appear in the respective worlds. These are the kangaroo lady Sheila, the penguin Sgt. Byrd, the Yeti Bentley and the monkey "Agent 9". The skills from Spyro 2 were carried over into this part.

However, the search for gemstones through Sparx is not available from the start. While this ability is available from the beginning in the 2nd part, it must first be activated in the 3rd part.

Part 4 of the Spyro series takes place immediately after part 3. Each young kite is given a dragonfly, and to celebrate this appropriately, the kites put on a party. But this has hardly started and an old friend appears. It is Ripto who has returned and now wants to take revenge on Spyro and the dragon, but he did not come alone because he brought his two followers with him, Schluck and Crush. In order to complete his revenge, Ripto wants to take the dragonflies from the dragons, because they give them the necessary strength with their magic, but instead of banishing them, they are now distributed throughout the dragon world. So it's up to Spyro again to find the dragonflies and defeat Ripto.

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly is based directly on Part Three and is the same in gameplay.

Here the "red" dragon wants to seize power. That is why he distributes dark gemstones everywhere, which suck the light and colors from the world. So it's up to Spyro again to destroy the dark crystals and find the light crystals. A Hero's Tail is different than the other Spyro parts, as more attention is paid to the supporting characters and thus more mini-games are included. Since the game in Europe, unlike its predecessor, was no longer developed by Check Six Games and Equinoxe Digital Entertainment, but by Eurocom , it differs from Enter the Dragonfly in many ways.

This part designed a new Spyro universe in which the following parts also play. Some characters were retained, but should not be equated with the corresponding of the older games. The game tells the story of Spyro. He lives here with Sparx with a family of dragonflies. But when he realizes that he is not a dragonfly, he sets out to explore his true origins. He meets Ignitus who explains to him that he is a special dragon that is only born every ten generations. Ignitus gives him the assignment to free the dragons of the four elements of fire, ice, earth and electricity that are trapped in the moment. With these he learns to control and master the power over these elements. In the course of his adventure he is repeatedly attacked by a huge and evil dragon named Cynder, whom he tries to save in the end and leads her back to her good side.

Like its predecessor, A Hero's Tail , Spyro masters several attacks, which he learned in the course of the introduction. These include: fire, earth, ice and electricity. These can also be expanded in the course of the game, which increases the range and damage they do. The combat system has changed fundamentally. So there are now combo attacks.

In this part, Spyro will defeat the great ape king Graul. He has to make his determination about the elements (fire, earth, ice, lightning), find the historian, etc. After big arena fights with Scapp he has to go to the heavenly caves. But the purple dragon still has something to offer.

In terms of play, the game is almost identical to its predecessor, A New Beginning. Spyro has mastered several elements again, the combat system has been slightly revised, and the same main characters appear.

In this part, Spyro, Cynder and Sparx wake up from a three-year freeze. Connected by a magical (neck) tie, which was created by the Dark Master (Malefor), the two must defeat the Dark Master. It turns out that Malefor is the first purple dragon. Spyro and Cynder are abducted by unknown enemies as soon as they wake up. The game then continues with a kind of gladiator fight in which Spyro and Cynder have to fight a summoned golem and shortly afterwards partially destroy the collar. With the help of Sparx and Jäger, they manage to escape through the catacombs. They are attacked again by the giant golem, but destroy his hand.

Spyro and Cynder now have to fight their way to the dragon city, where they meet Ignitus and the other dragons. After the city besieged by the dark troops has been defended, the dragons prepare a campaign against the armies of the dark master. In the Dragon City, the golem attacks Spyro and Cynder again, this time with a new hand made from debris. At the end of the fight, they destroy the two dark crystals on the golem's head and destroy it. In the further course Spyro decides to face Malefor and defeat him once and for all. Cynder follows him to keep helping him. Ignitus and Terrador bring the two to a dam near the border with the Scorched Land, the kingdom of Malefors. At the dam, they encounter the Destroyer, a gigantic, monstrous creature created by Malefor to destroy the world. The rupture of the dam brought about by Spyro and Cynder means that the destroyer can be held in the water for long enough and almost defeated. After a short time, however, the destroyer has recovered and can continue on its way, despite its destroyed heart.

Ignitus brings Spyro and Cynder through the Ring of Fire, sacrificing his life to bring them to the Scorched Land. Spyro, deeply saddened and shaken by Ignitus' death, transforms into his dark form and can just be restrained by Cynder from looking for Ignitus. After fighting their way through the Scorched Land, they arrive at the Flying Isles, the last hostile site in front of Malefor's Palace. From there they fly to the palace in a vortex. Once there, Malefor reveals to Spyro that it is the fate of all purple dragons to bring about the end of the world. Since Spyro doesn't believe him, he gives Cynder back all of her memories, and so does her evil form. Spyro manages to transform Cynder back, whereupon Malefor attacks both of them. After a tough fight, Spyro, Cynder and Malefor arrive at the Heart of the World, a giant crystal that contains the souls of all the dragons who have died. Spyro hurls Malefor at the crystal and the souls of the dead dragons destroy him. However, the destroyer was able to complete his mission and thus the world is about to end. Ignitus' soul explains his fate to Spyro. This orders Cynder to flee and to get to safety. Cynder stays with Spyro, and shortly before he triggers a gigantic magical wave, she whispers “I love you”. In the credits the historian declares Ignitus to be his successor and informs him shortly before he hands over his cloak that he could not find Spyro in the book in which all the dead dragons are entered. Even Ignitus, now as a new historian, does not know where Spyro and Cynder are now. In the end you see them both flying over a very beautiful country.
