Griptonite Games was an American video game developer based in Kirkland , Washington . It was founded in 1994 as Realtime Associates Seattle Division and specialized in handheld computer games. In 2011 the mobile game specialist Glu Mobile took over the studio, and in 2017 it was closed.
history
The company was founded in April 1994 by Steve Ettinger in Redmond as a subsidiary of Realtime Associates under the name Realtime Associates Seattle Division. Ettinger, like the founder of Realtime Associates, David Warhol, was previously employed by Mattel Electronics and developed Intellivision for the game console . Ettinger did commissioned work for Realtime Associates before Warhol asked him to set up a subsidiary in Seattle. The studio was mainly responsible for developments for handheld consoles , initially mainly for the Game Boy and Game Gear , and later also for stationary consoles.
In November 1999 the studio was acquired by KnowWonder, a Kirkland-based developer of children's software, and renamed Griptonite. The company name of KnowWonder was changed in 2001 to Amaze Entertainment , under whose umbrella three specialized development departments: KnowWonder (children's software), Adrenium Games (stationary consoles) and Griptonite (handheld consoles) operated. From 2005, all development work was initially only published under the name Amaze Entertainment.
On November 14, 2006, Amaze Entertainment was acquired by Foundation 9 Entertainment . From July 2008, all developments were published under the new umbrella as Griptonite Games. On July 29, 2009, Foundation 9 Entertainment announced in the course of austerity measures that Amaze Entertainment would be merged with its subsidiary Griptonite Games. The direction was given to Griptonite's studio manager JC Connors.
On August 2, 2011, Griptonite Games with 200 employees and a subsidiary in Hyderabad was bought by Glu Mobile , whereby the specialist for mobile games doubled its workforce in order to be able to increase the number of its projects. In 2012, Glu Mobile's President of Studios took direct control of the studio, laying off 25% of the workforce. The company has since been run as Glu Mobile Kirkland. Further layoffs followed in 2013 due to the increasing conversion at Glu to Games as a service . The studio also moved from Kirkland to Bellevue . In 2017, Glu Mobile closed the studio in Bellevue.
