history
The company was founded in 1969 by Kagemasa Kozuki and other partners in Osaka , originally as a company for the rental and repair of jukeboxes . The name Konami is composed of the first letters of the co-founders: Kagemasa Ko zuki, Yoshinobu Na kama, Hiro M atsuda, and Shokichi I shihara. Translated it means "small wave". Kozuki is still the chairman and CEO of Konami. Video games have been developed and distributed since 1978. Konami is considered a music game expert and founder of Bemani , a term derived from beatmania .
In 2004 the number of employees worldwide was approx. 4,300. In the 2007/2008 financial year, Konami was able to increase sales by 6.1% to the equivalent of 1.8 billion euros and profit by as much as 20.2% to 205 million euros. The fastest growing franchise was the soccer simulation series Pro Evolution Soccer .
In the spring of 2015, there was speculation in the media about the status of Konami's lead game designer Hideo Kojima . In mid-March, according to its own information as part of internal restructuring, the company removed the name of Kojima's development studio Kojima Productions from all product pages on the Konami website, thereby triggering public speculation about the departure or disempowerment of Kojima, which the company countered with statements, that Kojima will continue to be involved in the development of the Metal Gear title Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . Kojima had already referred to the title as the conclusion of his story and his last design work on the series. Late April confirmed Konami for further rumors that the development of the original by Kojima in collaboration with Guillermo del Toro planned survival horror -title Silent Hills had been recruited. On April 24, 2015, Konami ceased trading of its shares on the New York Stock Exchange.
