Frogger is an arcade and video game produced by Sega in 1981 and developed by Konami .

Game flow

The game is about guiding a frog safely across a busy road and then across a river. On the five-lane road, the frog has to avoid various vehicles. Since the frog cannot swim, it crosses the river using turtles and drifting tree trunks as platforms. It can fall prey to swimming crocodiles and snakes. The aim of each level is to fill the five bays on the opposite bank with frogs. If there is a fly there, you receive 200 bonus points. This also applies to taking a female frog with you or to completing the course in a particularly short time.

As the number of points increases, crossing the street becomes more dangerous due to increasing traffic. Likewise, the number of enemies in the river increases while at the same time the gaps between the platforms increase.

Implementations

Frogger first gained popularity in arcades and on the Atari 2600 and was later implemented for the Commodore VC 20 / C64 , the Sinclair ZX Spectrum , the IBM PC as well as the Apple II and various game consoles . In July 2006 a version about Xbox Live Arcade was released for the Xbox 360 , which in addition to improved graphics also includes an online multiplayer mode.

The Philips G7000 and TRS 80 versions of the game Frogger were split over two screens: one was the road to be crossed, the other the river to be crossed. So all content of the game could also be played on the graphically weak hardware.

One version of the game is integrated into the lighting control consoles of the Frog series by Zero 88 as an Easter egg .

Today the original program code can also be executed independently of the original hardware with the MAME emulator .
