About this picture

The Ostdeutsche Rundfunk Brandenburg (ORB) was from its founding on October 12, 1991 to April 30, 2003 as the state broadcaster of the state of Brandenburg, an institution under public law with its seat in Potsdam .

With effect from May 1, 2003 , the ORB merged with the Sender Free Berlin (SFB) to form the new Broadcasting Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB). Like the RBB now, the ORB and the SFB were also members of the working group of public broadcasters in the Federal Republic of Germany ( ARD ).

ORB studios

The ORB maintained its broadcasting center in Potsdam. The main studios were also located there. Further studios were located in Cottbus , Frankfurt (Oder) and Perleberg .

history

In order to set up an independent broadcasting organization in Brandenburg, a regional broadcasting directorate was established after the reunification of the two German states in 1990. The radio program Antenne Brandenburg was initially broadcast for the state of Brandenburg via the Potsdam , Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder) stations .

The ORB was founded as an institution under public law on October 12, 1991 and incorporated into the ARD on November 27, 1991. When the German television network and the former GDR radio station ceased broadcasting on December 31, 1991, the ORB began broadcasting on January 1, 1992. Originally, the ORB was supposed to appear under the title “Ostdeutscher Rundfunk” (ODR) based on the previous ARD stations NDR , SDR and WDR . This idea was discarded in the fall of 1991, however, because in addition to the ORB, the MDR and the NDR were also responsible for the transmission area of the former German television station .

The ORB started broadcasting on January 1, 1992, 12:00 a.m. - immediately after the DFF had finished broadcasting. Actually, the DFF was not allowed to continue transmitting a second after midnight - but a few seconds passed before it actually switched. The MDR image with the sound of the ORB and its director Hansjürgen Rosenbauer was then broadcast for several minutes via some stations that now broadcast the MDR television program (including Brocken, Dresden) .

The transmitter was based on the DEFA site in Potsdam-Babelsberg . For a while the television program was produced there in DEFA barracks until a modern television center was built. The radio program Antenne Brandenburg of the GDR radio was taken over and continued to operate. This was initially continued to be produced in the building of the former Potsdam district studio of the GDR radio in Puschkinallee. The other two programs, Radio Brandenburg and Rockradio B , were produced in the Berlin radio station Nalepastraße of the GDR radio. Later other buildings in Babelsberg were renovated and refurbished and a new radio house was built to create capacity for all programs.

As early as 1995, the Info-Radio Berlin-Brandenburg of the ORB and the SFB started the Internet radio streaming service Info-Radio on Demand together with the Technical University of Berlin .

From the foundation to the merger with the SFB in 2003, Hansjürgen Rosenbauer held the office of artistic director .

The programs of the ORB

Radio

When the ORB began broadcasting on January 1, 1992, the ORB had three radio programs. Antenne Brandenburg was already started by the radio of the GDR in May 1990 . This was now operated as a station with regional information and a popular mix of music. The second radio program, Radio Brandenburg , was conceived as a culture and information program for Brandenburg. A third radio program Rockradio B was the youth program. At times it broadcast on the frequencies of the former GDR youth radio DT64 , which was limited but not switched off at first.

On February 22, 1992, Radio B Zwei started its first radio program in cooperation with the SFB. The program was a wave of information and service for Berlin and Brandenburg and aimed at listeners aged 25 to 50. Another co-operation between ORB and SFB was with the youth radio Fritz on track, that the ORB Youth Radio Rock Radio B replaced. This station started broadcasting on March 1, 1993.

After a short trial run, another wave of cooperation between ORB and SFB started on August 28, 1995, the Inforadio (“infoRADIO”), a digital news and information channel that broadcast around the clock.

The further expansion of radio cooperation between ORB and SFB led to the discontinuation of Radio Brandenburg (ORB) and Radio BZWEI (ORB / SFB) on August 26, 1997 . Radio Eins , a daily accompanying program for listeners aged 25 and over, went on air as the successor to both programs .

In the cultural field, the ORB entered into a collaboration with the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR) in addition to the SFB . From October 3, 1997 to December 31, 2002, Radio 3 was the joint classical and cultural wave of the ORB and NDR (the SFB was also involved until 2000).

Simultaneously with Radio 3 on October 3, 1997, another wave of cooperation between the ORB and the SFB Radio Kultur started under the leadership of the SFB. In addition to broad political coverage, this program offered classical music, new music, jazz and world music.

Until the time of the merger with the SFB on May 1, 2003, the ORB broadcast the following programs either alone or in cooperation with other radio and television companies:

  • Antenne Brandenburg - State program with regional information from the studios in Potsdam, Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder) and Perleberg
  • Radio Eins - daily accompanying program for listeners from 25 years in cooperation with the SFB
  • Fritz - Jugendradio in cooperation with the SFB
  • Inforadio - wave of news and information in cooperation with the SFB
  • Radio Kultur - Kulturwelle in cooperation with the SFB
  • Radio 3 - classical and cultural wave (until 2000 in cooperation with the SFB and the NDR and then until December 31, 2002 in cooperation with the NDR, then continued by the ORB alone)
