distribution
The name was very common in German-speaking countries, but has recently been used less frequently. It was considered to be the “typical German name par excellence”, and colloquially the word has become a term for German speakers in general. During the Second World War it got a negative connotation in English and Russian ( ethnophaulism ), comparable to the term Iwan for Russians , and is a derogatory term for Germans, like the word herb in US English .
