Gregor Fritz (born March 11, 1693 in Birgitz , † April 1, 1774 in Hall in Tirol ) was an Austrian baroque sculptor .

Life

Gregor Fritz was born as the son of Lorenz Fritz and Maria, geb. Schleiferin, born in Birgitz. In 1717 he lived in Obergrinzens , and in the same year he married Ursula Matt. The couple had two children, Bernhard and Ursula. Nothing is known about his training. In 1727 he was accepted as a sculptor in Schwaz . When the Schwaz parish church was converted to baroque style , he received many commissions, after which he had to look for a new place to work and live. After the death of the sculptor Franz Stöckl from Hall, he applied for citizenship in Hall in 1732. He received this only in 1733 after the assurance that he would pay Stöckl's widow, whose workshop he took over, 18 kreuzers a week. After the death of his wife Ursula in 1767 he married the widow of the sculptor Christof Wörndle from Hall. He died in Hall in 1774.

Gregor Fritz is one of the most important baroque sculptors of the first half of the 18th century in the Tyrolean lowlands . He shows stylistic parallels to the Innsbruck sculptor Ingenuin Lechleitner (1676–1731), partly also to Andreas Kölle (1680–1755) from Fendels and Stephan Föger (1702–1750) from Innsbruck. His first secured work is the figural decoration (nine angels making music) of the organ of the Schwaz parish church, which he created in 1729 with his assistant Johann Pürcher. As a result, numerous statues and altars for churches in the Tyrolean lowlands were created. These were initially in the high baroque style of folds, the later works show a restrained movement and a stronger emphasis on the physicality. One of his students was Franz Xaver Nißl .
