The Federal Association of Practicing Veterinarians eV (bpt eV) is a professional association representing the interests of independent and employed veterinarians in Germany. The association, based in Frankfurt am Main , with around 8,300 members represents the largest veterinary interest group in Europe. The full-time and honorary representatives of the bpt try to influence the legislation in the interests of practicing veterinarians by maintaining political contacts in Berlin, Brussels and the provincial capitals. In addition, the association offers its members information and services related to veterinary practice, in particular practice-oriented training by the bpt Akademie GmbH.

Important concerns of the bpt are the preservation of the freelance profession of the veterinarians, the maintenance of the dispensing right for veterinarians, the minimization of the use of antibiotics in the veterinary medicine in order to prevent the development of microbial resistance, the reduction of bureaucracy in the curative practice, the welfare of farm animals and hobby animals Improving the profitability of veterinary practices by anchoring business knowledge in veterinary studies, food safety and consumer protection.

The feminization of the veterinary profession has resulted in more than half of the membership being women. The proportion of employed veterinarians is increasing steadily.

The bpt is led by an elected executive committee, which is supported by a managing director and around 20 full-time employees. The executive committee consists of the president and two vice-presidents. There are also five committee members. The 16 regional associations of the bpt are organized as independent institutions and can exert influence on the association's politics through their chairmen on the bpt board.

Historical

The bpt was founded in 1951. It sees itself as the successor organization to the "Reich Association of German Veterinarians" founded in 1919 (renamed "Reich Association of Practical Veterinarians" in 1920), which was disbanded in the 1930s as part of the National Socialist coordination.
