Life

Fritz studied chemistry in Halle and Marburg from 1939 and after military service from 1940 to 1942 in Frankfurt am Main with a doctorate in physical chemistry in 1946. He completed his habilitation in inorganic chemistry in Marburg in 1953 (where he was a student of Hans Kautsky ) and was from 1957 Senior assistant and from 1959 associate professor at the University of Münster . In 1961 he was a substitute professor in Bonn and from 1962 to 1965 he was associate professor at the University of Giessen . From 1965 until his retirement in 1988 he held the chair for inorganic chemistry in Karlsruhe (as successor to Rudolf Scholder ).

He was an expert in silicon chemistry (including silicones , carbosilanes ).

In 1970 he received the Alfred Stock Memorial Prize , in 1967 the Lavoisier Medal and in 1966 the FS Kipping Award. Fritz had been a member of the Leopoldina since 1972 . In 1978 he was accepted as a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . He was an honorary doctor in Giessen. 1981 to 1997 he was one of the editors of the journal for inorganic and general chemistry (with Werner Hanke , Rudolf Hoppe ).

He should not be confused with Gerhard Fritz (* 1960), Professor of Toxicology in Düsseldorf .
