Bernd Fritz (born November 12, 1945 in Bechtheim ; † April 16, 2017 there ) was a German journalist , satirist and writer .

biography

Bernd Fritz was born in 1945 as the son of an engineer and a winemaker's daughter in Rheinhessen . After graduating from high school in Worms , he studied biology and mathematics in Mainz and Romance languages in Frankfurt am Main. After his experience as a trainee lawyer at an integrated comprehensive school in southern Hesse, he decided in 1984 to write satires for the satirical magazine Titanic . In 1985 he was appointed to the editorial team of the magazine, in 1987 he became its editor-in-chief. He also translated the French caricaturist Jean-Marc Reiser into German.

Fritz became known to a wider audience when he appeared in the television show Wetten, dass ..? under the pseudonym Thomas Rautenberg stated that he could recognize the color of crayons by their taste. During the show, Fritz identified himself as editor-in-chief of the satirical magazine Titanic . With the following edition Titanic achieved the highest edition in its history. In it, Fritz revealed the trick to his readers: The glasses were crooked, so he could see the colors.

In 1990 Fritz gave up the editorial management, but remained connected to the magazine as an author and wrote for Spiegel and FAZ-Magazin , which he joined in 1995. After the magazine was closed in 1999, he became a freelance contract author for the FAZ and also began to write for Feinschmecker , the Mercedes magazine and various wine magazines. From 2011 to 2013 he was responsible for the garden column plant piece in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung , and he was a beer columnist in the wine magazine FINE . Since 2006 he has been co-editor of Titanic .

In 2007, Fritz married Hanne Reuter for the second time. He had two children. He died of suicide in April 2017 at the age of 71 .
