history
St. Lambert Church
A Franconian nobleman named “ Bero ” is said to have taken his manor here in the 6th century and founded “ Beroheim ”, from which the place Bechtheim developed. A precursor church to today's St. Lambert Church was built in the 8th century by the Liège Monastery, which then came into possession of the place.
Bechtheim was first mentioned in a document in 793 as Beraheim in a document from the Fulda monastery . The place name was 817 Berthahem, 1193 Berthehem. The place is mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 1070. First the Lords of Bolanden and then from 1267 the Counts of Leiningen had ownership rights to Bechtheim. These pledged their property several times. In 1700 the so-called Simultaneum was introduced in Bechtheim (Protestant churches could also be used by Catholics), which increasingly led to quarrels between the denominations. In 1722 Bechtheim was granted market rights .
Bechtheimer rod
At the market square there is an obelisk with a height of 4,842 meters. The length of a side area of 4.375 meters corresponds to the length of a " Landesfreirute " in the former Leininger Flecken Bechtheim. The " Bechtheimer Maß von 1817 " was called the " ordinary Landesfreirute " and was divided into 16 shoes or 192 inches. The " Geometric Rod ", which corresponds to the length of a national free rod , is used for easy calculation .
The rod length of 4.842 meters, erroneously published by the French administration in 1802, was only used in neighboring towns. The meter was abolished in 1811 and reintroduced in 1872. From 1818 the " Hessian Customs " was the unit of measurement in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . According to this, the Bechtheimer rod was the only local measure in Rheinhessen to have 175 inches (= 4.375 meters).
"Wine partnership" with Erfurt
In 1934 a "wine partnership" was concluded with Erfurt . In 1964, through the association Heimattreue Erfurter (Erfurter in West Germany) contacts to Bechtheim were established again. From then on, the Martinsfest on 10./11. November committed together in Bechtheim. After the “ reunification ” in 1990, the city of Erfurt officially resumed the partnership.
