Flonheim is a municipality in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Alzey-Land association.
geography
Geographical location
Flonheim is located in western Rheinhessen , approx. 5 kilometers northwest of Alzey . The next larger town close to the municipality is Bad Kreuznach (approx. 15 kilometers northwest).
geology
In the district of Flonheim there is a sandstone quarry in which the Flonheim sandstone was mined until the 1960s . The Wiesbach flows through Flonheim .
climate
The annual precipitation is 532 millimeters. The rainfall is very low. They are in the lower tenth of the values recorded in Germany. Lower values are registered at seven percent of the measuring stations of the German Weather Service . The driest month is January, with the most rainfall in June. In June there is twice as much rainfall as in January. The rainfall is distributed fairly evenly over the year. Lower seasonal fluctuations are recorded at 28 percent of the measuring stations .

history
- In Roman times, a quarry was operated in the Flonheim area . Sculpture finds (including Viergötterstein) in the Alzey Museum .
- Rich grave finds from Franconian times, especially a princely grave from the 7th century with weapons fittings.
- 764 first documented mention ("Flonenheim").
- Mentioned in 960 as the seat of the Emichons (later "Counts of Flonheim").
- Around 1133, Wildgraf Emich II founded an Augustinian canon monastery , which was abolished in 1554.
- Around 1300 the place was fortified.
- Until the French Revolution (1792), Flonheim was the seat of an office for the Wild and Rhine Counties.
- In the Hinkel house in Flonheim there was a post station on the approximately 920 kilometer long Habsburg Dutch postal route from Innsbruck to Mechelen (north of Brussels), which was operated by the Taxis family . This post station has been proven to have been in the period from 1506 to around 1558. This post station was given up in 1563 at the latest and moved to Wöllstein .
- A petrified manatee was found during construction work and is exhibited in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt am Main.
Incorporations
As part of the administrative reform, the two municipalities of Uffhofen and Flonheim were merged on June 7, 1969 to form today's municipality of Flonheim.

Culture and sights
theatre
The fourth oldest cinema in Germany (1923) is located in Flonheim. Until his death, Hans Frank (1915–2008) was Germany's oldest projectionist.
Buildings
- Evangelical parish church, built 1882–85 in place of the Augustinian canons' collegiate church, has a floor covering made of clay tiles from the old monastery church.
- Romanesque reliefs (around 1120) from the monastery church can be found on a house in Langgasse and in the rectory garden (they are stylistically related to reliefs in the south-eastern vestibule in Mainz Cathedral ).
- Catholic parish church, neo-Gothic quarry stone building from 1883–85.

Economy and Infrastructure

The federal autobahn 61 and the Bornheim junction are around five kilometers away. About the Kreuz Alzey is Bundesautobahn 63 achievable. Local public transport is limited to the ORN bus routes .
There used to be a train station for the Wiesbachtalbahn in Flonheim.
education
Up until the 2009/2010 school year there was a primary and secondary school. At the beginning of the 2010/2011 school year, the Hauptschule was converted into a Realschule plus .
