Johann Wilhelm Baum
Johann Wilhelm Baum ( French Jean Guillaume Baum ; born December 7, 1809 in Flonheim , † November 28, 1878 in Strasbourg ) was a Franco-German Protestant theologian.
Life
Baum came to live with relatives in Strasbourg in 1822, where he studied philology and theology from 1828 after graduating from high school. From 1834 he worked first as a lecturer, from 1835 to 1844 as director of the theological study institute Collegium Wilhelmitanum . Habilitated in 1839 , he also held lectures at the Protestant seminary as an associate professor from 1840. In 1847 he took over a pastorate at the St. Thomas Church in Strasbourg. When he was appointed full professor of ancient language and literature at the Protestant seminary in 1860, he gave up pastoral care, but not the preaching office. In 1864 he switched to the professorship for homiletics and finally in 1872 he became professor for practical theology at the new Kaiser-Wilhelms-Universität . Before he could switch to the chair of church history, he suffered a stroke in 1873 that made him unable to work until his death.
Baums mainly researched the history of the Strasbourg Reformation and the history of Reformed Protestantism. With his Strasbourg colleagues Eduard Reuss and August Eduard Cunitz was one of the editors of the first complete edition of Calvin's works ( Joannis Calvini opera quae supersunt omnia , 1863-1900) published in the Corpus Reformatorum . He was also a friend of Georg Büchner . In 1864 the University of Zurich awarded him an honorary doctorate .
