Ernst Christian Achelis (born January 13, 1838 in Bremen , † April 10, 1912 in Marburg an der Lahn ) was a Protestant theologian .

Life

Achelis attended high school in Bremen and studied theology at the University of Heidelberg and at the University of Halle-Wittenberg around 1857/59 . During his studies in, he became a member of the Frankonia Heidelberg fraternity in the winter semester of 1857/58 . He became assistant preacher in Arsten in 1860 , pastor in Hastedt in 1862 and pastor in Barmen in 1875 , where the Pauluskirche was built between 1880 and 1882 . In 1882 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. He did not accept an appointment at the university and as cathedral preacher, consistorial councilor and superintendent in Halle .

From 1882 he was rather professor of practical theology and university preacher at the University of Marburg , where he worked until shortly before his death. In 1897 he became a consistorial councilor and in 1908 a secret senior consistorial councilor. He was a member of the Hessian general synod. He promoted the creation of a new hymn book.

His plan of practical theology, elaborated with great learning from sources, built up in comprehensive completeness and clear systematics, marks the classic zenith of the subject. Achelis is one of the most important academic representatives of practical theology in Germany.

He had been married to Anna Iken since June 8, 1864, their son was the Protestant church historian Hans Achelis .

Achelis wrote several essays in the Zeitschrift für Theologie und Kirche , the Theologische Literaturzeitung , the Theologische Rundschau , the Deutsche Literaturzeitung and the Realenzyklopädie for Protestant theology and church . Then there are the independent works:
