Eckelsheim is a municipality in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Wöllstein .
The place lies within the recreation area Rheinhessische Schweiz .
Nature and geology
For many years, the "wine and herb village" has been known for its intensive work in and for nature. Numerous wild herb events take place from spring to autumn. From a geological point of view, the place has long been considered extremely interesting. The 35 million year old surf cliff on Steigerberg, excavated a few years ago in a gravel pit in Eckelsheim, proved to be a sensation .
history
Eckelsheim was under French rule from 1798 to 1814. After the Congress of Vienna (1814–15) the village became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. After 1918 Eckelsheim came under French occupation again. In May 1947 the community came to the new federal state Rhineland-Palatinate.
Municipal council
The municipal council in Eckelsheim consists of eight council members, who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a personalized proportional representation, and the honorary local mayor as chairman. Until 2014, the municipality council had twelve council members.

The local mayor is Rainer Mann (FWG). In the local elections on May 26, 2019, he was elected with 63.21% of the vote, making him the successor to Friedrich Bäder (CDU), who was no longer a candidate.

Bell Church
The landmark of Eckelsheim is the ruin of the late Gothic Bell Church . Since 1982, numerous cultural events have taken place in the ruins in the summer months. In 2002 the historical Bellermarkt, which last took place in 1902, was held again around the Bell Church.
Viticulture
Eckelsheim is characterized by viticulture, which has often been practiced in family businesses for many generations. At the Sommer-Inn, winegrowers, clubs or others invite you to eat, drink and celebrate alternately.
Awards
Eckelsheim took first place in the state-wide competition Our Village in 2005 and has been called Golddorf ever since . This was made possible through the years of commitment of many committed people who not only wanted to maintain the village charm and character, but also wanted to shape and develop it further.
