About this picture

Hohen-Sülzen is a municipality in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Monsheim .

history

The area around Hohen-Sülzen was already settled in the Bronze Age. In the Roman era (around 50 BC) there was a large villa rustica here . In 1869 two Roman sarcophagi, a diatret glass , five other precious glasses and a Dionysus bottle were found in a clay pit . It was one of the most important German glass finds from the late Roman period. Apart from the bottle, the other Hohen-Sülzer glasses have been lost since the end of the Second World War . The still existing Dionysus bottle is the main item in the collection of Roman glasses in the Landesmuseum Mainz (inventory no. R 6111). The bottle is 42 cm high and has a figure cut. The picture was cut in a deep cut with a three-dimensional effect, whereby the three-dimensional effect of the figures is enhanced by the engraving of the individual body parts. The multi-figure scene comes from the milieu of the wine god Dionysus. Due to this technique, the bottle is attributed to the same workshop that made the Lynkeus beaker in the Roman-Germanic Museum .

In the documents of the Lorsch Monastery ( Lorsch Codex ), Hohensülzen is first mentioned in 766 as "Sulzheim". In 1253 the village came as an exclave to the County of Falkenstein . At first these ruled the Lords of Bolanden , who were inherited in 1418 by the Counts of Virneburg .

The County of Falkenstein and with it the village of Hohensülzen passed to the Duke of Lorraine in 1667 via various owners . Due to the marriage of the Lorraine Duke Franz Stephan with Maria Theresa von Habsburg , Hohensülzen came to Austria and was subordinate to the Oberamt Winnweiler of the imperial part of front Austria . Hohen-Sülzen was therefore often referred to as "imperial Hohen-Sülzen" and in the historic town hall there are still double eagle chairs and door fittings from the Austrian era.

Hohen-Sülzen and its surrounding area was mostly French occupied from December 1792 and was ceded by Austria to France as part of the Left Bank of the Rhine at the conclusion of the peace of Campo Formio (1797) , where it remained until 1814. During this time it belonged to the French Département du Mont-Tonnerre with the seat of government in Mainz and was assigned to the canton of Pfeddersheim .

From 1814 to 1816 there was a joint Austrian-Bavarian administration based in Kreuznach , later in Worms . In 1816 it fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse , and since 1946 it has belonged to the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Hohen-Sülzen
Blazon : “Under a golden shield head, inside a green grape with leaves, split by blue and red; in front a six-spoke silver wheel, behind nine gold diamonds. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The municipal coat of arms was established in 1955 and confirmed in 1957 by the Ministry of the Interior of Rhineland-Palatinate ; it replaced the old coat of arms of the County of Falkenstein as a heraldic village symbol. Nevertheless, the Falkensteiner history remained decisive in the new coat of arms. The right half of the shield shows the coat of arms of the County of Falkenstein, the left a pattern of standing diamonds, which, according to the official municipality website, is uninterpreted and was taken from an old court seal from Hohen-Sülzen. Apparently it originally comes from the coat of arms of the Counts of Virneburg as the former owners of the Falkenstein Imperial Counties. Both parts of the coat of arms are crowned by a shield head with grapevine, which indicates the wine-growing tradition of the place.

Economy and Infrastructure

Hohen-Sülzen is characterized by winegrowing from the Rhine-Hesse region. The individual layers Sonnenberg and Kirchenstück are located in the large Domblick area of the Wonnegau area .
