history
Gundheim was first mentioned in a deed of donation for the imperial monastery Lorsch as Guntheim in the year 774 , the Gundheimer castle preserved in small remains in 1276. In the 15th century the place came into the possession of the Electoral Palatinate , local and castle lords were the Obersteiner . After their extinction, Elector Johann Wilhelm enfeoffed Baron Johann Erwin von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths with the village, bailiwick and court of Gundheim in 1699 . This family then remained in the village's fiefdom until the end of the 18th century. The castle was finally destroyed in the 17th century after it had suffered badly in the Schmalkaldic War in 1547 . As a replacement mansion, the so-called Palatinate Court was built in the 18th century , later the municipal administration and schoolhouse, now a local museum.
After the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops (1794), Gundheim belonged to the canton of Pfeddersheim in the Donnersberg department from 1798 to 1814 . As a result of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the Rheinhessen region, and with it Gundheim, became part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1816 . After the dissolution of the Rhine-Hessian cantons, the place came in 1835 to the newly established Worms district , to which it belonged until 1969.
From 1903 to 1968 Gundheim was the terminus of the Worms – Gundheim railway line . However, passenger traffic was stopped as early as 1961.
