history
As early as the middle of the 4th century, the Franks broke through the Roman fortification belt on the Rhine in order to gain a new home. Rheinhessen was occupied by the Franks in the 5th century.
The oldest written message from Franconian times about Ensheim dates from the year 769. On September 12, 769 an Almahar , probably the landlord of Ensheim, gave Lorsch monastery a wingert in the district of Aoenisheim , today's Ensheim. This Almahar also appears as a witness on June 12, 791 in a Flonheim certificate and has given the Lorsch Monastery further gifts. The first documentary mention from the year 769 also provides evidence that Roman viticulture was continued.
Later place names in documents are:
- 785 - Gennesheim
- 849 - Onesheim
- 1224 - Ennensheim
- 1283 - Onisheim
- 1299 - Ensenthaim
- 1337 - Onesheim
- 1375 - Onsheim
- 1437 - Oneßheim
Ensheim originally belonged to Wormsgau and became part of the Palatinate Counties with the formation of territorial lords in the 12th century . When the Palatinate principality was re-established by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa , Stromberg Castle ( Soonwald ) was also passed to the Count Palatinate . In addition to Ensheim, the Stromberg also included the Kronkreuz estate and the villages of Appenheim , Engelstadt , Grolsheim , Horrweiler , Weinheim and Schimsheim .
When the Count Palatine Otto divided among his sons Ludwig and Heinrich in 1255, Ludwig also received the village of Ensheim. It was included in the pledge of the castles and villages, which his son Rudolf and his wife Mathilde made to Count Simon von Sponheim in 1311 for 2,000 pounds of Heller . This pledge was redeemed by the widow Mathilde and her son Adolf in 1320, so that Ensheim fell back to the Electoral Palatinate , which it remained until the French Revolution .
In Ensheim, the St. Johanneskloster bei Alzey , a Cistercian monastery , owned an estate that is mentioned in 1357. This was exempted on February 28, 1357 by Count Palatine Rupprecht II from the tax and valuation - with the exception of the Korngülte - that had to be delivered to him by the Hofgut. After Weistum the Palatine had in this farmhouse, the hostel right with stables for their horses. The citizens of Ensheim had to provide food and drink as well as feed for their horses.

coat of arms
The local coat of arms of Ensheim was approved on February 25, 1985 by the district government in Neustadt. It has no local history, but was developed based on the territorial affiliation.
Blazon : “Above a raised shield base split by silver and red, inside on the right a blue lily, on the left a silver armchair split by red and silver, on the right a silver hoe and a silver crook with pannisellus , crossed, on the left a blue crown with a blue growing out of it Four-leaf clover. " | |
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms represents the affiliation of Ensheim to the Electoral Palatinate and has received the Rhine-Hessian and Mainz colors of red and silver. The crown and cross represent an allusion to the Kronkreuz courtyard in the Ensheim district, which was transferred to the St. Martin Cathedral in Mainz in 1299 , while the Marienkloster zu Flonheim owned rights and possessions in the village itself , which is due to the blue lily, the symbol of Mary , is expressed; The possession and rights of the Mainz bishop's church are also expressed by the bishop's staff. Hoe and chair refer to agriculture and viticulture . The coat of arms unites the current economic structure of the place with its historical past as well as the interpretation of the name of the Kronkreuz monastery courtyard in the area. |
