history

The Stromburg was probably built in the 11th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1056 when Count Bertolf named himself after the Stromburg. In 1116 it was destroyed and rebuilt by the Archbishop of Mainz Adalbert I. These early mentions probably refer to the "old Stromburg" on the Pfarrköpfchen (see Pfarrköpfchen Castle ).

The first reliable mention of the Stromburg comes from 1287. The village of Stromberg in the Guldenbachtal , which was first mentioned in 1344, developed under its protection .

The castle was conquered several times during the Thirty Years War and only destroyed on March 3, 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession . The shield wall , the keep , a mighty gate tower as well as parts of the ring and the kennel are still preserved from the castle . The Stromburg was the home of Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut , an equestrian leader of the Thirty Years' War.

From 1977 to 1981, parts of the castle ruins were renovated and, with the addition of modern parts that characterize the appearance today, they were expanded for gastronomic use. After a renewed expansion that cost around DM 8 million since 1994, the building housed a gourmet restaurant under the management of Johann Lafer , which was first called Le Val d'Or and was called Johanns Küche from 2019 . In addition to the restaurant, the rustic tower room as a second restaurant and the Stromburg Hotel were set up in the building.
