About this picture

Offstein in Rheinhessen is a municipality in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Monsheim .

geography

Offstein is located in the southern part of Rheinhessen and in the western part of the Upper Rhine Valley . The Eisbach , a tributary on the left bank of the Rhine, runs through the southern part of the local community. The type of settlement is like a clustered village . A mild and arid climate is favored by the protected leeward side of the surrounding low mountain range. A high loess content and a high natural productivity of the soil enable a high yield potential in agriculture.

Offstein also includes the Rosengartenmühle and Stegmühle residential areas .

history

Grave finds that date back to the Neolithic Age provide clues about the first settled inhabitants of Offstein . Also Celtic and Germanic inhabited for settlement before the Roman period . The knowledge of the Romans regarding viticulture and the construction of stone houses was adopted by the rising Franks from the end of the 5th century. The origin of the name "Offstein", which refers to the family name of a local family "zu Offenstein", also dates from this time.

The place was first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex between the years 766 and 768, which testifies to the exchange of land between the then Bishop of Metz and the Lorsch Monastery . Several gifts of property followed in the period that followed. The medieval feudal system was determined from 1359 to 1661 by the Junkers of Oberstein, who resided in Oberstein Castle. After a renewed period of tenure, more and more land fell to the local residents.

With the division of the Electoral Palatinate during the French period , Offstein was incorporated into the canton of Pfeddersheim in the Donnersberg department from 1798 to 1814 . In 1815 it was assigned to the Grand Duchy of Hesse . When the cantons of Pfeddersheim, Osthofen and Worms merged after the French occupation, the village became part of the Worms district in 1835 . Offstein has been a member of the then newly formed community of Monsheim since 1972.

Economy and Infrastructure

The railway line Worms – Grünstadt ran through Offstein . Freight traffic to Offstein was stopped in 1998 and the line in this section was closed. There is a bus connection in a south-westerly or north-easterly direction via line 451 Grünstadt – Worms. The A 61 is only a few minutes away by car. The supply of electricity began in 1900, thanks to the installation of a system in the Stegmühle in the west of Offstein. Nine years later, the connection to the Seebach area Osthofen took place via a newly laid water pipe, which served the drinking water supply. The village wells that were used until the beginning of the 20th century were continuously replaced.
