history

Gimbsheim was probably founded by a Franconian named Gimmund around the year 500 during the settlement of the Franks under Clovis I. Since the name of a place in the historical sources changes over the centuries, the name Gimmundheim (home of Gimmund) is now known as Gimbsheim .

As with many other villages in the region, the village is first mentioned in the Lorsch Codex . This includes a document dated May 13, 766, in which two residents of Gimmenheim , as it was called at the time, donated farmland and vineyards to the Lorsch Monastery for their salvation. Another gift from a villager was made in 813 to the Fulda monastery . More concrete information about the development of Gimbsheim is only available for 1194; From this year there is a first documentary evidence of a church in town. Just a few years later, in 1208, a Gimbsheim pastor named Heinrich appears in the sources, where he is mentioned as a member of the Worms cathedral chapter .

In 1402 the Gimbsheim court seal, the "Mauricius seal", was mentioned for the first time today. In 1499 the place burned down completely, in 1662 it came to the Electoral Palatinate . Four years later, a plague epidemic struck the population. On October 17, 1704 there was another major fire that destroyed a large number of homesteads.

In the course of the French Revolution, the village came to France through the Napoleonic campaigns in 1798, to which it belonged until 1814 as part of the Département du Mont-Tonnerre (Donnersberg district). This also went hand in hand with secularization: the important entries on the local history have not been made in the church register since then, but instead are noted in the town hall. A doctor in Gimbsheim is mentioned for the first time in 1800.

In 1830 the Rhine was pierced in the course of straightening this river. The areas of the Gimbsheimer Altrhein , which are dry apart from smaller areas of water, were placed under nature protection in 1977. The outdoor pool in Gimbsheim had already opened three years earlier. In 1997 the TV series "Himmelsheim" was shot for SWR in the town; In the same year the Niederrheinhalle was built as a center for sport and culture. In 2000 the “Pfarrwiesensee” was finally redesigned from a gravel pond to a bathing lake.

Blazon : "Under a black shield head in red covered with golden ears, grapes and vine leaves, a silver diagonal bar covered with a black double hook."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The double hook on the coat of arms was taken from the Gimbsheim coat of arms of the 18th century. It stands symbolically for hunting, fishing and shipping on and in the Rhine. The emblems of the head of the shield represent the viticulture and agriculture that has been carried out in Gimbsheim for a long time.
