The Gimbsheimer Altrhein nature reserve is the second largest nature reserve in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate .
The 112 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 1979 , extends west of the local community Alsheim between the federal highway 9 running to the west and the east flowing Rhine . State road 437 runs along the northern edge of the area and to the east .
The landscape is a former loop of the Rhine, which was separated from the river by the straightening of the Rhine in the 19th century and later silted up due to the lowering of the water table.
