List of old Rhine waters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of old Rhine waters contains a selection of river arms and meanders of the Rhine , which have the names Alter Rhein , Altrhein , Altrheinarm , Altrheinzug , Altarm , Rheinaltarm or Restrhein , among others . Artificially created bodies of water ( quarry ponds ; e.g. the Altrheinsee ), which could be confused with old Rhine waters, are mentioned in the section connecting waters to the Rhine .

The arms and meanders were left behind as side arms of the Neurhein when the river bed was naturally shifted ; others were cut off when the river was artificially shifted , for example in the course of straightening the Rhine from 1817 under the direction of Johann Gottfried Tulla . These backwaters, together with the Neurhein, limit islands or peninsulas. The old rivers have sometimes lost all water-bearing connection to the Neurhein. Some are located in nature reserves, offer breeding grounds for water birds or serve as retention areas in the event of floods. Sometimes they can also be used for recreational canoeing and fishing is done there.

Notes on finding old Rhine waters:

Some names of old Rhine waters contain the name of a nearby town or municipality, but others do not. In order to make it easy to find in any case, there is usually a localization key in front of each water body name - in alphabetical order and in italics . Below this are the geo-coordinates of the water body with details of its position in relation to the Rhine (l / r =  left / right ), then either the water body name itself in normal letters and further names of the water body in italics . Or there is only a reference to the name of another place name after the location key, under which the searched water body is listed in italics .
