The Lower Rhine Canal is a 32.3 km long drainage canal in the Upper Rhine Plain between Freistett and Wintersdorf .

Course of water

It arises in Freistett from a branch of the Mühlbach , which flows through almost all of Rheinau . At Helmlingen , the Lower Rhine Canal passes under the Rench and shortly afterwards meets the Holzlach , which supplies it with more water. At Greffern it then crosses under the Acher and a little further the Acherner Mühlbach flow into it as Schwarzbach and the Scheidgraben . At Söllingen the canal is crossed by the Mühlbach , the lower reaches of the Sasbach . At the level of the Baden-Airpark , the canal flows through an old Rhine , which it leaves after a short time.

At Iffezheim , the Lower Rhine Canal passes under the Sandbach (lower reaches of the Bühlot ), which flows into the Rhine shortly afterwards. The Lower Rhine Canal meets another old Rhine near Wintersdorf, where it ultimately also flows into the Rhine .

Hydraulic importance

The Lower Rhine Canal was completed in 1960 as part of the Acher-Rench correction and is mainly used for drainage. Individual sections near Freistett only carry water when the Mühlbach floods; in other parts, the base and the lower part of the slope are secured with stone paving to prevent base erosion.
