Religions

Catholic parish of St. Laurentius

St. Laurentius Church

In honor of the Roman deacon and martyr St. Laurentius , a chapel was built very early on, which was taken care of by a folk priest from the Schwarzach monastery. In the place of today's church there was already an older one with the year 1499 carved into the keystone. Until the Archdiocese of Freiburg was founded in 1827, the Hügelsheim parish was under the control of the Bishop of Strasbourg . The community built today's church in 1842. A major church renovation took place between 1962 and 1967. Since October 23, 2005, the parish of St. Laurentius Hügelsheim has formed a pastoral care unit with the parish of St. Martin Sinzheim.

Evangelical parish

When, after the Reformation, the sovereign's religious affiliation determined that of his subjects, the Hügelsheim residents changed between 1522 and 1634 eight times between the Catholic and Protestant denominations ( Cuius regio, eius religio ). Since 1636 only Catholic pastors were in office here. After 1945, some Protestant Christians came to Hügelsheim. In 1964/65 the evangelicals of the four parishes of Hügelsheim, Iffezheim , Wintersdorf and Ottersdorf were able to build their own church in Iffezheim. It is named after Paul Gerhardt .

Traditionally, the people of Hügelsheim lived from agriculture , fishing , shipping on the Rhine and gold panning . However, classic agriculture can no longer be operated profitably on the sandy soils in the immediate vicinity of the Rhine . More than a hundred years, a hill Heimer citizens brought from his military service in Alsace the asparagus with, which has since grown here. Hügelsheim has developed into a nationally known asparagus village. Today, few full-time farmers and numerous part-time farmers grow asparagus.

Another special crop is Jerusalem artichoke , from which a schnapps is distilled, which is marketed in several variants (pure, with pickled Jerusalem artichoke tuber or asparagus stalk, peeled off with bloodroot).

The Canadian Halifax Airbase of NATO (districts Hügelsheim, Rheinmünster ) was an important economic factor until the withdrawal of the armed forces in 1993. Great hopes are therefore placed on the privately operated Baden Airpark , which is located on the conversion site of the Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport , operates an industrial park and various leisure facilities.
