Cartoceto is an Italian municipality in the Marche region with 7983 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), located in the northernmost province of Pesaro and Urbino .
geography
Cartoceto is 14 kilometers from the port city of Fano in the hills that are off the Adriatic coast.
The municipality is divided into different districts: Lucrezia, Molinaccio, Pontemurello, Ripalta, Salomone and Sant'Anna. The main town Cartoceto itself, which is also the seat of the municipal administration, is located at an altitude of 235 m above sea level. Due to the geographical position there is an ideal climate for growing olives.
history
The origin of the place probably goes back to the Katharger, who were defeated in the Battle of Metauro (207 BC) by the Roman army and retreated into the surrounding hills.
Olives have been grown around the village since the 12th century and since then the high quality of the oils produced has been the hallmark of the place. In addition, other high-quality products such as the autochthonous " Bianchello del Metauro " and the Sangiovese grape are grown for wine production. Sheep cheese matured in caves rounds off the culinary portfolio of the community.
