Pergola is an Italian municipality with 6012 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region .
geography
The place is about 60 km west of Ancona , the capital of the Marche region, in the wine-rich valley of the Cesano river , which flows east to the Adriatic Sea .
The neighboring municipalities are Arcevia ( AN ), Cagli , Fossombrone , Fratte Rosa , Frontone , San Lorenzo in Campo , Sassoferrato (AN) and Serra Sant'Abbondio .
history
In 1946 valuable Roman bronze statues from the 1st century AD were found in a field , the golden bronzes by Cartoceto di Pergola , for which a museum was set up.
Attractions
The Gothic church of San Francesco was built in 1255 in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi . A “Annunciation” by Lavinia Fontana (1552–1614) can be seen in it.
Viticulture
The place is known for the red pergola wine , predominantly from the grape Aleatico is made. It is ruby red and has a strong bouquet.
