Fossombrone

Fossombrone is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 9286 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region . The municipality is located about 25 kilometers south-southwest of Pesaro and about 14 kilometers east of Urbino on the Metauro .

history

The name of the community is a corruption of the ancient settlement Forum Sempronii , which was named after the tribune Gaius Sempronius Gracchus . The Via Flaminia ran through the village earlier . Ancient treasures such as the statue of Vertumnus (god of the seasons), the Furlo Pass (a Roman tunnel built under Emperor Vespasian ) and two bridges over the Metauro, which were built under Trajan and Diocletian , are still present today .

Fossombrone was already a bishopric at an early stage (since 109) .

In 552 the battle of Busta Gallorum took place here , which led to the destruction of the Ostrogoths by an Eastern Roman army. Until 1198 the place was part of the Duchy of Spoleto , then it came under papal rule. When the Dukes of Urbino gained sovereignty, Fossombrone flourished. In 1631 the place was again part of the Papal States until the Risorgimento in 1860.

Fossombrone is located on Strada Statale 73bis ( Europastraße 78 ) or on the section of Strada Statale 3 Via Flaminia . The railway line from Fano to Urbino via Fermignano , which had a train station in Fossombrone, has been closed since 1987.
