Metauro is a river in Italy that flows through the Marche region .

geography

The Metauro consists of the two rivers Meta and Auro , both of which have their source in the Apennines in the Umbria region . These two rivers then join in the municipality of Borgo Pace , and the Metauro then flows east through the Italian region of Marche . Finally, the river continues to flow northeast and joins the Adriatic Sea south of Fano .

history

The Metauro (lat. Metaurus) was the scene of two battles in history . 207 BC The battle of Metaurus , in which Hasdrubal, Hannibal's brother, was defeated and killed by Gaius Claudius Nero , took place on the banks of this river; and in 271 AD, Emperor Aurelian defeated the Alemanni in the Battle of Fano , also on the banks of the Metauro.
