history

As a result of ancient archaeological evidence, thanks to the discovery of a necropolis of the "Picenavolks", it is assumed that San Costanzo dates from the VIII-VII. Century BC Goes back to BC. In the XV. In the 19th century, one has certain knowledge of the presence of the Malatesta who are said to have built the castle walls. The castle of San Costanzo then acquired great strategic importance, so the inhabitants of Fano built its walls in such a way that they were of use during the dreaded invasion of the Visconti . After changing historical events, San Costanzo passed to the rule of the Papal States in 1520, at the time of Pope Urbano VIII .

The urban architecture as a whole dates back to the sixteenth century, with manorial buildings of the nobles and houses of the less well-off. Precious paintings are preserved in the churches. In the Church of St. Augustine you can admire canvases by the painter Giuseppe Ceccarini from Fano. An antique canvas painting by Claudio Ridolfi is kept in the “Gemäldegalerie” of the town hall . The eighteenth century theater “La Concordia” has recently been restored and opened to the public. At that time it was the seat of theater performances.

geography

The municipality of San Costanzo consists of two hamlets: Cerasa , whose name probably derives from the name of its mountain, Ceregia, from which the castle was built on the remains of the castle of Querciafissa. The Church of the Holy Martyr Laurentius preserves a baptismal font made of stone from the year 1629. The other district, Stacciola , of old construction, was in 1412 by Pandolfo Malatesta to Niccolo' Maurizi of Tolentino given as a fief. Stacciola is also a fortified part of the village.

From the hills of San Costanzo one can admire gentle, romantic and rugged landscapes: from the sea to the Apennines, through an unspoilt land rich in small lakes, namely the hundred lakes that feed the specialized crops in the hot summers.

Events

On the first Sunday of Lent before Easter and on the last Saturday in July, the traditional and historical Polenta Festival takes place in the main square.
