Quintus Pomponius Secundus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quintus Pomponius Secundus was a Roman politician and senator .

Life

Pomponius came from a plebeian family, perhaps from Iguvium in Umbria . He took his brother Publius into domestic custody in 31 , when he was indicted in the Sejan affair . Pomponius brought the prosecutor to court in 33.

In 41 Pomponius was, instead of the Emperor Caligula , Suffektkonsul . After Caligula's death, Pomponius wanted to restore the republic together with his colleague Gnaeus Sentius Saturninus , but the Praetorians proclaimed Claudius the new emperor. Pomponius was left in office until July 1st. Accused by Publius Suillius, he fled to the revolting governor of Dalmatia Lucius Arruntius Camillus Scribonianus . After the collapse of the uprising, Pomponius was also likely to have died.

Cassius Dio reports that Pomponius was a lowly flatterer who was always trying to add new objects to Caligula's debauchery and his curiosity. During a spectacle in the imperial palace, this consul sat at the emperor's feet and covered them with his kisses from time to time.
