Gabicce Monte lies in the foothills at an altitude of about 150 meters.

history

The area of Gabicce Monte was already settled in Roman times - this is attested by today's ceramic finds.

Already in 909 a settlement can be found around the church of Sant'Ermete from the year 775, from which today's district Gabicce Monte developed. The top of the hill was probably already fortified at this time, but it was not until 998 that the name "Castellum Ligabitii" appears for the first time in a papal document. The name is derived from the name of a large landowner - Ligabitio. Almost nothing is left of the old castle, whereas it is almost certain that the current name is derived from the name of the nobleman - spoken in the local dialect.

The property followed the eventful history of Pesaro : From 1285 Pesaro was a signoria under the rule of the Malatesta family , followed in 1445 by the Milanese dukes Sforza , who were in turn replaced in 1513 by the Della Rovere , who ruled in the Duchy of Urbino and became their capital in 1523 Pesaro moved. In 1539 the castle and the land belonging to it fell to Orazio Floridi di Fan as a ducal fief. Then Gabicce is added to Count Ottavio Mamiani. After the death of the last Della Rovere in 1631, the duchy fell to the Papal States and shared its history until the Risorgimento in 1860.

In the first decades of the 20th century the landscape changed continuously: After the First World War, a fishing port was built at the mouth of the Tavollo, at which the new lower town Gabicce Mare quickly emerged opposite the outskirts of the neighboring town of Cattolica. An economy based on fishing is slowly developing there, but is then driven explosively by tourism, without completely displacing the fishing background. The growth of the lower town meant that in 1942 the town hall was relocated to Gabicce Mare. The former center of the settlement in Gabicce Monte becomes a district in this way.

Due to structural damage after the earthquake in 2016, the town hall will be replaced by a new town hall in 2018. In the building, which was made entirely of wood, special attention was paid to energy efficiency.
