The Duchy of Urbino was a sovereign state in the Marche region of Italy.

The first rulers of Urbino were the Montefeltro . Emperor Friedrich II appointed her Count of Urbino in 1213. The first Duke of Urbino was Oddantonio da Montefeltro who received the title from Pope Eugene IV in 1443 .

The Duchy stretched in the area around the capital Urbino in the north of brands and bordered on the east by the Adriatic Sea , to the west Tuscany and the south by the Papal States . In 1523 the capital was moved to Pesaro .

After the Montefeltro, the duchy was briefly occupied by Cesare Borgia and then passed by inheritance to the papal family Della Rovere in 1508 , who held it until 1625 or 1631, except for a break by Lorenzo di Piero de 'Medici . After the death of the last Della Rovere, Francesco Maria II , the duchy fell to the Papal States and shared its history up to the Risorgimento .
